I've heard rumors of spraying it on bait for bullhead fishing. Anyone do this?

There's a can on the transom shelf for freshening plastic worms after a missed strike on the duckweed. Guaranteed second and third strikes.

WD40 page : " Fact: Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40®. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40® can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40® to attract fish."

Do your own experimenting. You might be surprised at the results.

My brother inlaw when he was in his bass fishing mode. Often had a can right on the bow of the boat when casting plastic worms. Also seen people put it on crank baits. Myself I never done it have used Bait Mate and Gulp though.

And you want an odd sounding bullhead bait? Piece of red flannel, about 2" x 2", pierced on a regular hook, that's been rubbed with Ivory soap. Suspend a foot off the bottom and use glow bobbers.

Now write the Ivory soap company and ask em if their soap attracts fish.

My brother and I ran 100-hook setlines back in the 60s. Every 10th hook was a large hook. A bullhead was hooked below the dorsal on this hook. Flatheads were the target. At 27 cents a pound on the hoof, it made good sense to bait with bullheads for the big boys as bullheads only brought 8 cents a pound. This was at Epstein's fish market in La Crosse back in the day.

We ran short lines with the ivory soaped red flannel baits just for the bullheads and built a holding pen for them tied up to the dock.

I used to spray it on my crankbaits just to see what all the hoopla was about. Judging by the oil slick left where the lure enters the water I'd say most of it washes off the second it hits the surface.

Eh...wot?

Been used by sturgeon fishermen in San Francisco bay for years. I only tried it once, on a slow day, so my results don't count.

I would use it on top water baits when casting.
