Porky's are protected in Utah, just like rattlesnakes now, you don't mess with them and you keep clear, there was a time they were just shot for target practice though, now they are just a big rodent being left alone !

Always though them a very interesting creature, kinda of like a land beaver but more able to inflict pain if needed !

Porkies have more value than most fur right now.
The hairs and quills for craft trade or taxi.
I usually skin and tan them. More value that way.
And the meat is one of my favorite k-9 baits.
So they have a purpose to me.

$3-$5 a porky last season, the buyer tried to pay me $10 a porker. I told him the check was wrong so he wrote me another one for $10 for both the next time, I brought him one a couple of week later and he gave $3 for it! LOL frown

I don’t know where to start.....they chewed the tires off our grain elevator, they ate the floor off the porch of camp, they ate every corner off the stacked logs on the side of the lodge, they chewed the cdx plywood from every deer stand, vet bills for 9 bird dogs stuck with quills, ate the brake hose off my son’s car. All totaled, well over $20,000 in damage. Not counting the value of trees that were damaged.

Other than that, I guess they seemed harmless enough.

According to the book COMMUNICABLE DISEASES IN MAN, they are the only mammal in north America that doesn't have a pathogen that can be transmitted to humans even if eaten raw. I have often wondered what the regular operator of the D9, that I found the book in, was trying to look up lol. I do know that several indigenous people consider them highly edible wherever they live. I will eat one, one of these days if I can get a young one.

They are a part of the forest.

I am as diehard of a bird dogger as you will likely ever meet. I gives most porkies a pass when my dogs find them. Not the porcupines fault.

Well, I have little use for porcupines, have had dogs quilled, etc. They find my wolverine cubbies, too. I still don't kill them because I can.

My cousin and I shot lots of them out of my grandparents apple trees 50 years ago, now I hardly ever see one. I leave them alone especially since my porky hating dog has passed on(current dog ignores them). They are a cool animal and I wish there was a few more.

Well when they are in our Game Law books / synopsis as "Unprotected species" may be shot at any time thats good enough for me.

However, I do use the Quills on most. Shoot a porky, save a tree and a dogs nose.

They are the second most important animal in the bush besides beavers for providing chicots(standing dead timber) for nesting sites for many furbearers, and other wildlife.

Some don't think they have any purpose in the bush, but they do.Not saying they should be protected,if there is an overpopulation it wont hurt a thing to thin them out some.Likely will benefit the health of the pop overall.
A pair of leather gloves with a wide strip of porky tail velcro'd to the back might come in handy in a bar fight.
