Don't know why I planted them, not really a fan. What size should they be to harvest?

if its the round red ones start pulling when they are half the size of a golf ball. they don't all get ready at the same time. you can generally see the top of the root when they are ready. the long white carrot shaped ones are good at about 2/12 inchs long. same thing you usually can see the top of the root. can even brush a little dirt off if your careful to gauge the size of them

Take a look at those sold in the grocery store, and harvest when they look like that!
You don't want them to get too big or they get woody.

Won't be back to the grocery for another week. Might be too big by then?

X2, Danny is spot on. First time i grew them i let them get a little too big and they actually got really hot. Bit into the first one and boy what a surprise. They will get a little tough/woody also if allowed to grow too big as trapdog1 said. I prefer the carrot shaped white ones.

Saute them in a bit of butter. They get sweet when cooked.

If you have lettuce put some in a bowl. Add thinly sliced radishs. Chop up some bacon and fry it. Put a little sugar on the lettuce. Pour the skillet of hot bacon grease and chopped bacon in. Stir it up some by tossing it like any other salad.

You will do it pretty regular after that first time

Is that about the right size or should I let them get a little bigger?

I typically plant small sections, mostly red ones and plant about every 3 weeks mid August. The earlier ones from my experience can get larger b4 getting bitter and go to seed as they grow in cooler weather with shorter days. The ones I plant in mid June I take a bit smaller as they grow faster and mature faster too.
As to when start when you think the first ones are big enough and let them grow and pull as they age. You will soon find out how big and old you want them and how many feet of row you want for each planting.
