I tend to shy away from 'organized' charities. I prefer to give, personally, to individuals who are in need. No need for a 'middle man' to take a cut or, for all I know, the whole thing. That's just Me. Everybody has their own way of doing things. As long as I'm able, I help where I can. Charlie

Charity has been part of my entire life. I serve on 2 boards and very proud of the work they do. One is a local Foundation for Community Care and we just awarded 400K in grants to local groups and organizations that work for improving health etc.. Every single red penny given to this Foundation goes back to the people. Not one red penny is used for wages, building, utilities etc. nothing is spend for operations or operating this foundation. It is very unique and not many charities can say every penny goes back.
The other that I'm a board member of is also giving of time back the community/county/and surrounding area. It is a charity of giving your time for the betterment in projects of labor. Tonight we meet as a group and will do a few projects. We have a list of around 60 people willing to donate their time for great causes of life and to help others.
Volunteering is a huge part of this world and without it many organizations would never survive.
The reward for is being able to help it takes so little of what I have been blessed with so giving back fill my heart. I have had people crying their eyes out because someone helped them and couldn't believe that would be possible
It is priceless to be able to give back and there really isn't any other way to describe it.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

This is a topic I don't think gets talked about enough. There is great merit to being and anonymous giver as the good book and social norms dictate. However the discussion can offer folks some perspectives and ideas on how and where to give.
Giving will be easier, whether time or money, when you give to organizations your believe in. What ever the charity it should be something you hold near and dear to your heart. From my understanding, 10% is a pretty reliable standard. 5% I apply to the Church while 5% I give to secular charities.
Frankly, my budget never looks better or do I have more extra ducets as when I am managing my budget to give to charity and frankly I have some hefty bills.

YWCA domestic violence programs: 1 in 3 women experience inter-personal violence and 1 in 5 sexual violence. To put it context, 1 in 8 will have breast cancer. Violence against women is an epidemic.

4-H gets the greatest amount of my money and time. specifically 4-H shooting sports and wildlife.
4-H shooting sports is the largest youth shooting sports organization in Wis and with all the state programs under one overall charter the US.
if we can educate them right early , they are that much less likely to be the antis later .
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities. When my first grandson was born, he was at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia . (CHOP ). My son and daughter in law stayed at the RMH there from late October till mid February. 2013-2014. They charged $15 a day ( meals included ) and there was a great meal every evening cooked by volunteers who provided the food and there was plenty of food in the dining area for breakfast and lunch. If you couldn’t afford the $15 fee, you could stay for free. They had a beautiful room and the place was run by volunteers. In fact, there’s only a handful of paid folks in the whole organization. How's he doing now? I too donate to them having lived in one on and off for 3 years in Manhattan. Also Make A Wish they gave my daughter the trip of a lifetime for all 5 of us. A Disney Cruise to the Bahamas. Those are the main 2 I donate too.

My Church is number one then missionaries we support with money. I volunteer time at church for some things.
After that the Farm Bureau 4H and FFA - Ag in the classroom plus I volunteer for our state trapping program to teach kids and a few other things. The Farm Bureau and trapping go hand in hand a lot of the time. Being on the board has gained me quite a few spots to trap. A couple years ago my wife and I bid on a hog at the 4H fair and won it. You never saw a kid smile so much in all your life and this little girl that raised that pig. I was in 4H as a kid and like seeing the kids learn the truth about that way things are. I take kids and dads with me trapping and teach them how to catch what they want to catch.
Right now I have two young men that I am working with on my farm. They are both city kids and I have them building fence but its more than that. They are good boys but they need some back bone and they need to see how things really are. Both their parents told me they wanted me to work on them. It has been a real treat. Any of you that can help young men grow into men should do it so some fruitcake doesn't come along and ruin them. We talk a lot when we are working. We don't always work. Sometimes we just set under a shady tree and talk. It means a lot to kids when a man takes interest in them and teaches them. I bet most of you have stories about men who influenced you over the years. Both of them know how to build fence now. they can hammer a nail or staple straight, set a post, stretch wire, and they are both good and safe at it. Both of them have been telling their folks about building fence and the jobs they did. Their parents like it when they come home and go to bed because they don't stay up half the night plying on the computer.
Just passin through

Salvation Army is one of the best charity's to give to as far wasted money for wages/salaries and money used on other expenses. There was great article on the most efficient run and what percentage actually went to help the people instead of being wasted on other things.

I have a monthly donation automatically taken out for St. Judes Children's hospital. I feel it is a wondeful place to donate to. Also give whole blood every two months and platelets every couple weeks to the American Red Cross. Platelets are such a help, especially for cancer patients. I sure wish more people would step up and give blood and platelets. I know it can be a hassle but it's nothing compared to what the people in need of it goes through. I lead an extremely crazy and hectic life but donate as often as possible. Hopefully someone here will step up and start giving!

Note the catigory to look at is salary/wages and benifits. They are ranked but botom line going back to the people minus their expenses is very important to me. SA is about 6th but look at the Salary/Wage/Benefit they are the lowest. An outstanding charity. https://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Guide-to-Giving/America-s-Top-50-charities-How-well-do-they-rate

Yes snowy the Salvation Army is a good place to donate to. We were extremely poor when I was growing up. With eight brothers and sisters my parents struggled. As hard as my poor old dad worked we didn't have much. The Salvation Army would sometimes help greatly and I know some years where the few Christmas presents under the tree came from.
