It's an effort to keep them from being used like a handgun.
So many restrictions on handguns make it unattractive to jump through those hoops. Easier to purchase a long gun and "custom" it so it can be carried.
I can't see it, at least that it would be comfortable but I'm not everybody.

Because when the National Firearms Act (NFA) was enacted in 1934 they were trying to restrict firearms that gangsters (mafia) were using; machine guns, sawed-off shotguns etc..

I am betting James could give you the proper legal reason why, my recollection is that they were made illegal and that was upheld by the Supreme Court because they were not relevant or needed for the Militia. I cannot recall the case off the top of my head. US vs Miller 1939.

Because when the National Firearms Act (NFA) was enacted in 1934 they were trying to restrict firearms that gangsters (mafia) were using; machine guns, sawed-off shotguns etc.. The whole story. They made booze illegal, prohibition, which made folks want it which made the mafia to supply it. So in typical government double down stupidity they passed the NFA based on appearances and perception rather than reality. FYI, the orignal bill also included handguns. The NFA like most regs disfavored the common man but placed minimal restrictions on the wealthy (tax stamps). Also based it's violation of 2A on constitutional authority to levy taxes. Completely bogus and unconstitutional by any reasonable interpretation.

And “sawed off” just means less than 18 inches. That said Remington and Mossberg both currently manufacturer and sell shotguns less than 18 inches now through some loophole.
I have nothing clever to put here.

And “sawed off” just means less than 18 inches. That said Remington and Mossberg both currently manufacturer and sell shotguns less than 18 inches now through some loophole. Since the manufacturer never installed a shotgun stock on it, it was never a shotgun - it's just a firearm. Only shotguns have a barrel length requirement. If it had ever had a shotgun stock on it, it would be a shotgun and would be illegal. Our gun laws are ridiculous.

I have always wanted a decent quality switchblade. I think that switchblades and sawed off shotguns were made illegal for the same reason "military style" rifles will be made illegal; they scare stupid, overly emotional people.
Keith I think there is no federal law about switchblades, or automatic knives, as they're more accurately called. My state legalized them several years ago. I own several. Jim
