I was shocked when he said who he was. What a great man to talk with! He was interested in advertising with us, but we've got a waiting list for banners, and I wasn't able to fix him up. He wanted folks to know he's still alive and kicking at 84 years old, and he still gives instructions.

He also wanted folks to know that he is out of his book, snarelines across the West, but it's being reprinted and will be available soon. He does still have copies of the book, Master Wolfer for sale.

You can contact him at:

PO Box 127
Tularosa, NM 88352

Mr. Lucero is a really nice person, spoke with him a couple of years ago and purchased his book Master Wolfer, which is excellent.

At that time Mr. Lucero was wanting to reprint his book Snarelines Across the West, but the publisher wanted to much money to make it worthwile.

Glad to see this reprint finally happening, because Snarelines Across the West is also a great book worth having.

I believe he is also still making lures.

Paul, he didn't happen to mention the cost to get his Master Wolfer book, did he? Then I could get it ordered with the first letter mailed to him, rather than mailing to him twice to get it. smile

I heard he has a bow shop there in New Mexico. I think it was Wayne that told me that. I met James back in the 80’s when he lived out around Garden City Ks. A good guy that I enjoyed being around. Glad to hear he is still going.

I bought some Helfrich 550s at the Ohio Nationals about 20 or so years ago that had his name tags on.

Mr. Paul, I spoke with Mr. Lucero yesterday around 12:30 and gave him your number.

I told him I would like to post up his contact info & "Master Wolfer" cover photo on T- Man to help get the word out that he is alive and well in New Mexico.

I will post a separate thread with his complete contact info so it will be at the top of the page for anyone who wishes to contact him.

Have any of you guys taken instructions from him? (Some might have said but I missed) I really enjoyed the few articles I read about him and found his coyote and snare book very interesting. I remember he ran a school at one time but there was no way I could make it then. I had great luck with a couple of the sets I learned from him on coyotes.
I bet taking instructions would be a hoot of a good time. We cannot snare here except for beaver but I bought his snaring book anyway.
He had some thought provoking ideas in his coyote book. It is worth digging it out every once in a while.

A guy I worked with took private lessons from him when he was in Western Kansas. He spoke very highly of Mr Lucero.

I learned a lot of good stuff out of his book. One thing that stuck with me was on how he formed his trap bed. You will need to buy the book to see what I am talking about. It made perfect sense.
As mentioned above he taught some valuable sets for coyotes that I had not seen. Also had some good information on bobcats at the end of the book.
