OK so water has been reacting to sunlight. By the way 2 of the essential elements required to sustain life. For millions or billions of years depending on when GOD made both. But the geniuses in Californistan have decided it needs shade from balls created from by products of crude oil which is going to leech something toxic into the water. I guess you would have to be there to understand. I'm sure that all kinds of really nasty varieties of algee will thank them since it needs darkness to grow.

Aside from new genetically modified algae that are able to grow in the dark, I was unaware of any algae that was capable of surviving in darkness.

Which species are the "really nasty varieties that need darkness to grow?"

Just curious.

Not sure exactly what they are called but they are quite common in Washington D.C.

We got so far away from the land we have to call it toxic now. Dancing with the singing naked idiots is coming on. I gotta go.

I don't know of any algae that needs darkness to survive. The elephant in the room is bromide. Why is there so much of it and can the source of it be controlled. Sounds like maybe they are treating symptoms rather than the disease.

Bromide is not the problem. It occurs naturally and is harmless. Los Angeles uses ozone to treat the water at the filtration plant. Ozone and bromide combine to make bromate. The state of California has determined that bromate is carcinogenic. Whether or not is really is, who knows? They didn't worry about it because bromate levels at the tratment plany were always undewr acceptable regulatory amounts.

They also add chlorine at the treatment plant. Chlorine, bromide and sunlight combine to make bromate. The sunlight comes from the open reservoir the treated water is held in and the combination of bromide, chlorine and sunlight was creating bromade levels far above acceptable regulatory levels.

So they decided to take sunlight out of the mix and used the shade balls to do it.

The balls are made of food grade plastic with carbon black added to make them last at least ten years.

Blocking the sunlight reduced algae growth and allowed them to cut the amount of chlorine added to next to nothing.

The balls have been around for some time. They are usually used to keep waterfowl from hanging out on ponds near airports in an effort to avoid bird/aircraft collisions.
