People throw away stuff they don't use anymore even when there is nothing wrong with it so they don't get their place cluttered up like a hoarder.I try to force myself to do that once a year.

Yep....hauled trash for 21 yrs and found some amazing stuff in there. One town mixes grass clippings and leaves with solids from the sewer plant and compost it, then sell it to farmers for fertilizer. Another town just mulches grass and leaves into compost. Another town sells it. This town, there is no place to take brush, as the local refuse company is also a tree trimmer and wants $100 a load to take your brush. So, folks just get rid of it wherever then can find a place. Batteries are another thing. People throw out a lot of batteries that are good. I carried a battery tester with me in the truck and it paid for itself many times over.

Go onto Scrap Metal Forum under the grouping called "A Day in the Life of a Scrapper" and search for "curbco shopping". In some locales, guys do very well finding what people have out for the trash men, especially in upper middle class (who don't seem to care about spending money) or neighborhoods that have a lot of turnover in people coming and going (like Florida). Amazing what people trash if their own muni lets them toss it out...

Another reason is hardly anyone fixes stuff anymore. As a matter of fact a lot of stuff is made to break down and be unfixable. People have so much money nowadays and stuff is so cheap that things get thrown away that could easily be repaired,or even when people just want a new one. It is more convenient to just buy new stuff, and not really worth the money to fix cheap stuff, even if you can find a part(which is often half the price of a new unit).

I had a garage sale this weekend with stuff other people didn't want to deal with. I made about $850 from stuff I got for free. I do it at least once a year. Go ahead and leave your stuff at the curb, Im not to proud to pick it up.
Wish I had more time to trap....

I thought about Garage sales for my own clutter. Then I thought about just giving it away, then I realized I would still likey need to make a trip to the dump after all that waste of time,so just easier to toss right off the bat. Maybe this year I'll pile up the stuff on the trailer and put a sign-"free stuff"and leave it in the driveway for a week..That might lighten the load to the dump. Got an old snowblower, old chainsaw and old lawnmower and old BBQ that might get taken.

You cant give away a perfectly good working TV today, no matter how big it is. Folks want new smart tvs now.
Putting a "give away" sign on stuff gives that bad element an invite to come down your road.

Every time I go to the recycle center, looking thru the metal dumpster is a must. Find lots of short pieces of flat steel and angle iron that come in handy when welding, LP tank connections from grills to replace my older crescent wrench type, tractor tire chains and one of my better days was finding three receiver hitch’s with different drop heights and a half dozen balls to go with them. The two young guys working the center that day thought I was crazy for taking stuff back out. Can’t be too proud to pass stuff up that has value.

In Holdrege, NE, people set their clutter out on the curb, then everybody goes around town digging thru each other's stuff. After a week, the city picks up the junk that's left over!

One time my neighbor had a garage sale. Out in the yard he had a snow plow for a garden tractor leaniing against the telephone pole along with other stuff that said "free". I loaded her up and sold it at the flea market the next day. That Monday at the post office bulletin boards I saw wanted signs for the snow plow. I guess it wasn't free but it was way far away in the yard with other free stuff pile. So you're the one who snagged my plow!!

Thanks for selling me that plow, lumberjack. I fastened it to my ATV with duct tape and used it all winter.

Back when they lived in town, my folks bought a new fridge and placed the old one by the curb- with a sign stating that is free and still worked. After about a week of setting there ( no one wanted or took it) they put a sign saying "for sale $25". That night it was taken, stolen! LOL Dennis

I set a rolloff box at a construction site where a cellphone company put up a new tower. They threw away enough copper-lined conduit for me to earn $600 salvaging it. $3000 from an ethanol plant project.

Lots of guns and traps end up in trash cans too.
I have nothing clever to put here.
