There are a lot of those found around here in river/creek bottoms. I believe they were used by indians to break ice for drinking water.Probably had other uses also but were lost breaking ice.

Ax. They are found around rivers because Indians always camped near water.

wonder how that groove was made? would take a lot of rubbing to do that with a harder piece of rock. you would think losing one breaking ice would be a real bad day

My grampa and granny had a big one, they used as. a doorstop in their house, just like Keith's top pic. Was so heavy, would have taken a mighty strong warrior to swing that thing on the end of a handle! Was made out of granite, which we have alot of in my country, brought down by the glacers. People smater than me have told me, they used them for splitting skulls on buffaloe after running them off a cliff or steep grade! I wanted to keep it in my family, but was too late, my dad's brother had already spoke for it!

Looks like it's made out of Columbia River basalt, probably originally from Idaho, Washington or Oregon. I think there is basalt in southern B.C. as well. Stone tools got traded along way from where they originated; obsidian from Oregon has been found all over the west half of the USA. Nice
