need some help please. Looking at ditching direct tv - hammering us for almost $80 a month for basically crap. Has anyone tried sling tv? and do I have to have a Roku to make it work? We have a 2016 smart tv, but its not compatible with the sling app. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
And also, what do you do for local channels?

We use Amazon prime. Actually let out prime membership run out and get free access to movies and TV series on IMDb Freedive. Our only cost is high speed internet at this point.

No. If I want local news/ weather I get it online or by listening to local radio. I don't miss local tv programming at all.

They were all similar from the one's I tried the only thing keeping me from going that way is the lack of a guide like on the satellite TV brands. I could save $50 a month but the wife wants the guide so that guide is costing me $600 a year now. Most off a lot of older B movies with a few good older ones tossed in but boring for the most part. I could get local channels streaming just like regular TV but the movies or movie channels will cost you more.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

The problem I've found with streaming with any service, is you spend more time searching for what you want to watch rather than watching it. There's no guide, and it'll take signing up for multiple services to even get close to having the same channels as with satellite. And you'll still lose some channels. Switching between streaming services and searching for certain shows is a major PITA. I've tried it a lot, I'd rather pay a ridiculous satellite bill than deal with that. That's one of our biggest concerns. I don't have much patience anymore. lol

Roku lets you search titles and tells you all the channels that title is on and the cost if any. You then just select what channel you want to use and Roku automatically cues that title for you. It's to easy to stream TV and I waste to much time watching what's available. Keith

How long have you been with DirecTV? I got mad at the directv bill going up every year since I met my wife (who has had directv now for about 10 yrs). If you've been with them for a few years, call up and say you want to talk to someone in the customer loyalty program and let them know you're disappointed in your price compared to what you can get elsewhere streaming and they will likely give you $5-10/month off for a year. If you're willing to sit on the phone for about a half hour after you get the discount, tell them that you're still not happy and that you wish to cancel your service. They should put you in pending cancellation status and transfer you to someone who might offer you a smoking deal. And this doens't mean you are cancelled, but you have started the process which you can opt out of and continue on at any time. They will offer you extra programming for 6 months, etc......tell them all you want is a more reasonable price like introductory people get.
At the moment we're paying $30/month for what would at full price run around $115. It would have been $45, but our At&t plan got us $15//month off directv for as long as we keep it. The year before it was about $49/month with a couple months in between I had to work on them paying around $80. It's a game, but my couple hours of phone time saved us over $700 for the year. Just talk nice and calm with them and write everything down that they say they're giving you and for how long etc. I've never had them try screw me out of stuff yet, but I know the day will come! Happy trapping! ScottW
