The applicator was a hack. The green patch in the middle indicates that fact vividly. As far as proper use of herbicides on grass under trees goes, as long as you avoid getting it on the leaves, no harm will come to the trees. The correct herbicides will not move through the soil and stay intact to harm the tree roots. There was no way to avoid leaf contact in this instance since the tree limbs are so low to the ground. At least the dillweed got that right.

Sorry this is incorrect. Glysophate (and others) can and will be absorbed through the bark of trees, the chemicals will both harm the bark and then remain in the tree were it will be stored in the roots and upon spring emergence will kill or damage the newly emerging leaves. In addition to this liquid applications can evaporate from under the tree which causes it to rise into the leaves were it can be taken up by the leaves again damaging the tree.

Chemical and lawn companies love to talk about how their products are "tree safe", dont believe them. Grass is a weed preserve your trees!

If I was that owner of that yard, the company would be replacing the lawn and the tree.

I can't believe something like this would ever happen in SEC country!!! I mean after all, jbyrd has told us over and over how much better their athletes are, how smart the people are, and how they all have the highest moral compasses and would never ever make a mistake or do anything bad. Only thing I can figure is that they must have hired a yankee to perform the work. Maybe even a yankee from the Big 10. Yeah that's it!!!! grin grin grin

By the way, find out the name of the company that did the work. They can do my yard next and I won't complain one bit. I'm tired of mowing my swamp.

I have a neighbor who has his lawn fertilized every spring and it always looks like that for a while afterwards. The fertilizer burns the grass initially, but, in my opinion, shortly he will have a much better lawn.

Wrong bottle? I heard of a guy who kept a bottle of whisky hidden in a tree in his yard. A neighbor began visiting the tree to take a nip. So the guy emptied the bottle then refilled it with a liquid of the same color. He said the neighbor only visited the tree once after that.

Lawn care companies do not normally use any chemicals which are harmful to trees via root absorption. If they did, there were be no healthy trees left in anyone's yard.
What you seem not to understand is that tree roots do not stop at the drip line of the tree. If fact, the roots which do most of the absorption of nutrients and ground water occur considerable distances beyond the drip line.
This would indicate that there would be no area on the entire lawn which would be safe to apply the type of chemicals lawn care company's typically use.
I get the impression that you are inclined to prescribe to the notion indicated in this ^^^ sentence. That, of course, is your prerogative, wrong as it may be.

I bet they applied to much fertilizer early in the morning when the yard was wet and it wasn't watered or rained on soon enough.

You are misunderstanding or misrepresenting what I said. "Glysophate (and others) can and will be absorbed through the bark of trees" These chemicals are then stored in the roots and upon spring emergence travel from the roots up to the leaves. By keeping the chemical out of the dripline you avoid/limit the amount of chemical that could come in contact with the bark and be absorbed as well as limit the chance chemical could evaporate into the leaves during hot weather.

You may be a lawn or chemical guy and from your perspective I am wrong, I am a Arborist, I may not be a expert on every situation involving every tree but I have seen trees damaged or set back by "tree safe" lawn chemicals multiple times.

My advice, if you are going to use lawn chemicals at the very least stay out of the dripline of the trees.

This company does too, but they carry the jugs that they mix in the tank...... thus grabbed the wrong bottle. You do know that tank has to be mixed up right.
