Im fishing for trout..rainbow and browns. Big ones. 500 cfs of water up to 1500 cfs. Needing a Rapala that will get down there, not a floater. And about a 1/4 oz for distance. Theres a million different models! What do I need? I'v been think'n (thats bad) What does 500 cfs and 1500 cfs actuly tell me ? answer------- how much water going down the river. Right ? _________But________ That tells me NOT a thing. With out knowing how deep and how wide the river is. SO-----500 cfs and 1500 cfs means NUT"N About how FAST the water is flowing. With out knowing the river. In "Newt's" world just tell me The water is flowing 1-Slow -or- 2- Fast

The flows position fish differently.
Just like tides.
But cfs tells you how much water is flowing. Not how fast its going. You dont fish in the main flow of a river all the time. wide and deep vs rapids. What would cfs tell you here ? Just how much water is moving NOT how fast.

Always gotta be someone being difficult! Just fish and drink beer Newt. Don't matter if you catch anything. The depth of this hole is right below the dam, between wingwalls. Then it shallows up and spreads out. Boulders, rocks, gravel...fish position themselves accordingly like Marty said. I catch fish at 500 cfs but they are more active at 1500. Of course the water is warmer later in the spring/summer so that probly has some effect too. Trout are finicky too. Either they bite or they dont.

Never heard of cfs Gary Just trying to figger out what your think'n .
Now you got it nailed. You catch more fish in the faster water at THIS place.(sometimes when they bite)
Which opens another question. As a sport fisherman. What kind of divice do you carry,to measure the cfs ?

There's two gates, and if they're set on 500, that tells me that there's 1000 cfs flowing at that perticular point in time. (My Momma didnt raise no dummies)🙂 Much different than sea fishing, Im sure!

Another technique you should definitely try. Three way swivel to main line. Six inch dropper with bell sinker on one of the remaining eyes size/weight determined by flow and depth . eighteen-twenty inch leader on remaining eye of swivel with a #4 spruce fly, or #4 zonker, or #2 sculpin. Cast up steam and across at 45° rod tip high reel in as current pushes fly down stream bumping bottom. This will absolutely slay big trout in heavy water and is a lot cheaper than chunking $7 Rapalas. Good luck and have fun.

If you river fish you would see how knowing the amount of CFS (cubic feet per second) plays a big part in how and where to fish. Here is a link to most of the lakes around my area . You can click on each lake and get the elevation above sea level and the amount of water being discharged below the dam. It is referenced in CFS. Do the math and it will blow you away on gal per second . 1 cubic foot equals 7.48 gallons. https://www.tva.gov/Environment/Lake-Levels/Barkley
