I do my best to teach my kids everything I can about life and part of living a good life is eating good food. My grandmother always had homemade preserves and jelly for the family, and since her passing my dad has continued to make enough for everyone. My kids won't hardly eat breakfast without some of pur preserves. So I took the evening to teach my oldest son how to make it. We made strawberry and peach today. Some great stuff. Do you guys make freezer jams and what's your favorite flavors? [Linked Image]

My grandma makes great jam, so good all the commercially available stuff doesn't measure up. I should really have her show me how she does it while she's still around.

Yea tlguy, you should definitely have her show you. I made 18 pints of strawberry-peach today and plan on making 12 pints of strawberry tomorrow, and as soon as our blueberries are ripe I'll make several runs of blueberry-strawberry preserves. The kids will not eat store brands anymore because they are spoiled on the good stuff

My Cindy made some strawberry rhubarb freezer jam this year.
I think that it's pretty good, the neighbors say that it's fantastic.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. O Lord please don't let me be misunderstood.

My paternal grandmother made great strawberry freezer jam. We always called it strawberry stuff. She would give it to me on top of vanilla ice cream and would always give us some to take home. She always put it in square, semi opaque, plastic containers. I miss her. She was a great, kind woman and incredibly smart.

My grandmother's aunt, my great, great aunt Gladys, always picked the strawberries for my grandmother, well into her nineties. I believe Gladys was 98 when she died. She made me a shell covered, cigar box and made Christmas stockings, in my case 49 years ago, that we still use.

I remember those containers. I grew up with home made jam and make it myself now. Mostly apricot because I have a giant tree in the back yard.

The lowly mulberry makes a great jam. When my wife gets on a jam making kick I give her plenty of room so I don't interupt her!

Have had plenty of jams but never freezer jam. Must be a northern thing.

Hey trapNH, these freezer preserves are easy to make. All you need is fruit, sugar, lemon juice, surejell, and some jars. First you take the fruit and cut it up then use a dicer to cit it up small , kinda looks like a puret when finished. After fruit is mashed up, you just take 2 cups of fruit and 4 cups of sugar and mix together in bowl, and add a teaspoon of lemon juice, mix well and let sit for 10 mins. Then take your pack of sure jell and boil with 3/4 cup of water stirring it for 1min on hard boil. Take that and pour into fruit and stir good for 3 mins, now just put into jars. Let it sit at room temp for 24 hrs before freezing

No wonder that stuff tastes so good! And that explains why the commercial stuff doesn't taste as good, it would be tough to sell that stuff to the health-conscious crowd when the first ingredient is sugar.

RM, years ago my better half made elderberry freezer jam. We still have a couple left, and still useable.

I have heard of it - but what is the benefit of freezer jam over conventional jam that you can put anywhere? I know some acidity has to be added for some preserves but I guess I am used to my grandmas old preserves down in the root cellar in glass jars.....yes after some years of storage, they turn a color but they are still good.
