They are in the shallows here. Everything is flooded and the water is still just right. Going back out today with the boys. My fourteen year old finally followed the ole man's advice on jigging the shallows around every open spot along the bank and even in the thick stuff. I smoked him til I caught a few. He hooked a couple slabs and now not only is he smarter than me, he's a better fisherman. Giving me advice on how to do it........grrrrr.

Well they were definitely hitting! Kept a few good slabs for a fish fry and then did the whole catch and release gig. They were low for a while, but surfaced rather quickly and then it was one after another. My son ended up helping a kid out by setting up his pole with what we use. Kid and his father had been there for while and only caught a few bluegill. They hit the crappie pretty quick after that. Kid has a good heart and would give you the shirt off his back if ya needed it. Thought that was pretty good on him to take time out to help another sportsman out. Coyote Clayton, that's a nice haul of crappie! My son is the same way..lol

Just cooked up a bunch today.

Do you use any attractant scent?

The setup we use for crappie consists of a float with a 3 to 4 ft leader depending on lake/pond depth and an atomic tube Powerbait scented. That's the only lure we use for crappie and they hammer them tubes like no tomorrow.

They are about done here as far as "a run."

You can still pick up a straggler now and then though.

We enjoy it, the kids have a blast. IMO crappie are by far one of the best tasting fresh water fish out there.

We're not out to break any records, but the fish come one after another and I'm fine with that. Crappies weren't all that big but caught quite a few. Bass were hitting and the bluegill were decent sized. Started chasing the "big" gills for a while. Big G likes to catch them pan fish.

Been mostly fishing for gills because they're getting ready to bed by me. But when we do try for crappie we do alright, after the gills are done bedding crappie is what we mainly fish for the rest of the year

Trapping is easy you say? You try getting your target animal to step in a 3 inch area of its whole territory.

The lakes i usually go to have a lot in common with chocolate milk this year. I lose sight of a white jig after about 6 inches. With all this rain and flooding so far this year, its been tough.

Caught half a jazibazillion in the last couple weeks and ate nearly that many. I swear when you mix hot peanut oil and crappie fillets it must be like crack cocaine!

Caught a bunch tonight last 3 hours of the evening. Kept 7 for the freezer. All between 9 and 12 inches. Another couple weeks and they won't be much good for eating in the smaller lakes. Maybe in the big lake.
