My theory is if you can catch em on a piece of soap, there’s prob a lot of fish in the area and you’ll catch a lot more with shad or punch bait

I stayed In a house right On the Little Pee Dee river In SC and this old dude use to put In his boat there. And he told us that he just used a chunk of Ivory soap on his hook. Don't know If he ever caught anything or how he kept It on the hook but he said It worked.

Basic soap is animal fat and wood ash's, I have caught Cats on it.

Using set lines in eastern Arkansas's White River when I was growing up I and others caught many catfish on chunks of white soap. We used it mostly when water was discolored from spring flooding. Whether fish were attracted to the color, odor trail washing off in the currents, or what, I do not know. I think main ingredients in the soap were animal fats and lye.

Has any one used soap for catfish bait. I have got some recipe for some soap and thinking about trying to make some soap. beaverfoot, I have never used soap for catfish bait, but I do know others that do and they catch fish. They use Zote soap. I think its something used pretty often in Mexico and is found in just about every dollar store down here and also walmart. I think it is made a lot from tallow (animal fat). If so, I don't see any reason why a catfish would not eat the heck out of it. https://www.thespruce.com/zote-laundry-soap-product-review-2146774
