My 82 year old mother insists on leaving her cat food out overnight so I am occasionally called because she has a skunk. I have to use a live trap because of the cats. When I showed up this evening to check on her I saw I had a small skunk. I have a ton on my plate right now so decided to release it and catch it again later. I have done this many times without a problem but not tonight, as I raised the door it turned and hit my hand from a distance of about 4 inches. The first time I have actually felt the spray hit me as a liquid. I spent about 20 minutes with my hand in the Epson salt/hydrogen peroxide solution but still have a faint aroma. I probably will be shunned again at work tomorrow. I love being a trapper. a

As long as you're not a dentist...

All that time you spent trying to get that odor down to a tolerable level you could have dispatched the skunk easily in that time. Small skunks from my experience are much more likely to spray than the older larger ones.

If I had dispatched it I would have felt obligated to do something with it which would have taken me a lot longer then turning it loose. It didn't act bothered until the last second so caught me by surprise. It isn't the first time I've made the wrong decision.

I've ended up with a whole handfull of pure quill one time. Best way I found to deal with it is grab a can of gasoline and wash well. The worst part is getting rid of the gas smell!

Don't pick your nose for a few days.

Kill it and throw it in the garbage. Tie it up and put it at the end of the driveway. So easy.

Might not be so easy to catch it the second time. I had something taking the bait up to the trap, but not going in. Put a camera on it and it was a skunk. Maybe someone else caught it and brought it out to the country and let it go.

Yes It is there to bother mom another day. She was sprayed a few years ago when she reached down to pet her big black and white cat and petted a skunk instead. They are now my problem.
