When and why did they quit making 110s?

There are several dates in the mid 1980s when Montgomery was reported to have ceased manufacture of traps. The latest date that I am aware of is a letter that I posess dated Jan 21 1988 which stated that they at that time were INTRODUCING a new #1 coilspring but were not going to be building a 6 inch(160 size) bodygrip at that time. Monty was thus certainly still producing traps in very early 1988 but all additional evidence that I have seen suggests that they did close sometime later that year. I do not know if the 110 size bodygrip was still being produced that year. The latest catalog date that I have for a 4 1/2 inch(their number 500) bodygrip offered for sale was in early 1985, but they were NOT produced later than 1988, based on the evidence I am aware of.

I see F&T sells new Montgomery traps, but they are coil spring traps. It appears Oneida Victor owns them now. I didn't know Montgomery 110 BG's quit being made that long ago. I bought some from a guy on the Trap Shed (I will receive them Saturday). He says they've never been used. Now this ought to be interesting.

You are correct that Oneida Victor make a dogless round jaw coil spring in several sizes(I think they are still available) but those are really not the same traps that were made by Montgomery. The 500 size Montgomery body grip traps were made for at least a dozen years from the mid 70 through the mid 80s. They may have been made even earlier but I do not have catalogs for Montgomery earlier than 1972. It will indeed be interesting to see what you have purchased. The Montgomeries with the inch worm dog were loved or hated in their time as were those with the Stake-N-Take setup.

These must have the stake n take setup, because he told me they come with some sort of short stake.

The original Montgomery 110 body traps were called Stake-n-Take. They came with a skinny 12 inch long stake that went through a bracket on one side of the trap. The stake was almost worthless, in my opinion.

The wavy dog was another thing that some trappers had a problem with.

If the traps you get have complete Stake-N-Take setups with the stake and the spring bracket that the stake goes through, I would NOT use them as they have some collector value. If they also have the inch worm dogs they would be more valuable.

He said they come with the spring brackets and stakes. He said the dog has 3 settings. He is throwing in a few extra of the support stakes. Although I told him him I'd probably see if the bracket allows me to insert a stronger and longer stake (not for trap securement but for trap stabilization). He thinks that'd work. I bought 11. I bought them to use, thinking they'd be a good trap. We'll see how they look & function. I didn't realize they are old when I bought them. I was buying some other stuff, & he asked if I wanted to buy these.

I had a bunch of the stake n takes with the wavy dog. I used them and hated them. There was up to a 1 1/2" gap in the jaws when set off.

I got them tonight. Brand new (although they've been powder coated and don't have the original packaging). The guy showed me how to ~easily get around the issue of the spring getting positioned around the corner of the square trap. I've been playing around with them on the driveway. They seem strong and they seem to slam shut nice & tight. The 12" rods indeed seem a bit impractical. The unusual dog seems to work good (especicially on the 2 tightest settings). The powder coating probably defeats their antique value, but it seems like they'll work for my original intended purchase which is to trap with them. We'll see how it goes once I actually start trapping with them. Hopefully they function fine and effectively on the trap line. I may sell a couple since I bought more than I needed (it was part of a package deal).
