I’ve heard this thrown around many times, dispersal routes also..I understand the meaning of disperse,
dispersal, I’ve also heard to trap the dispersal routes or areas..So how does one find these areas?

Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes......
Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

Major rivers, lakes and even major HI ways create dispersal routes.

Have this stretch of expressway...probably more if I ask..if your trapping a major expressway how far out are we talking, how does this affect the way they disperse, and what time of the season is best..

The first pinch point away from the highway that offers continuation, like the point of the woods sticking out in the field. They normally don't run the highway itself but follow it in the direction into the prevailing wind. Dispersal happens all season with spurts as coyotes are removed from occupied territories. Pays off to leave sets in on these type locations all season if possible. That big river up that way would be my first choice for a dispersal route. The first high ground away from the river normally is hot.

Ok thanks..

Most of the river areas are owned by Consumers Energy, I do bow hunt in there as I made sure with them it was ok..not sure about trapping inland if it’s allowed I’ve heard no, but I’ll ask..it looks real good for bobcat
in the areas I’ve bowhunted..

When young of the year get itchy feet and start wandering they do not have a destination in mind. No road maps or pictures books. So they just follow stuff. Sometimes. When they come to a busy highway they may turn away. Especially if they were born in some out of the way place with no vehicle traffic. If there were vehicles around, and they do not perceive them as something new loud and strange they may just run across. They may follow a railroad track for awhile then spook away when a train comes along. You should already be setting pinch points, creek crossings, large culverts under the interstate, two track through a hedgerow, gates, saddles between big hills, standout features and tall grass strips between row crop fields. You will get plenty YOY pelts.

I luckily live right next to railroad tracks and 60% of the properties I trap have tracks going through them. I was told by a good coyote trapper they follow railroad tracks and when they reach a town they just bounce around them.

Good stuff thanks

You mentioned culverts, there is a culvert on the property that runs under the expressway..
How big of a culvert does it take for a coyote to feel comfortable enough to go through?
I’ve often wondered about this, I have a couple properties with culverts under expressways..

Will bobcats go through a culvert?

It generally takes a big one. those tube types are not to good for coyotes. Some of those big square culverts get used. a long culvert, even if its tall and wide square is likely to be avoided . Bridges are good too. They get avoided a lot less than even the big square culverts.
Doesn't need to be a big culvert for a cat to go through. they will use those tube culverts if they are 3 feet or so tall.

usually dirt and old mud inside them. look for tracks. can find tracks at the mouth of them also.
