Just wanted to share a few pictures from lobster season and mackerel fishing. We fish the mackerel with a fish trap. 18000 lbs in the boat today.

Mackerel gets sold for food or is sold as bait. Depends on the size of the fish and the time of year.

Awesome pictures. Mackerel sushi is good, but only real fresh and with red part cut out. They are good smoked also. Hope the bug market is good for you. Used to get .19 cents/pound for mackerel in the 1960's.

Whats a fish trap-a trap net?

Is that the same Mackeral that they call Jack Mackeral in the stores?

A fish trap is basically a heart shaped net with a bottom in it it. In the crutch of the heart is a doorway that is about 4 ‘ wide. There is a leader that runs from the shore to the door and when the fish hit the leader they follow it out and some go in the door and can’t find their way back out since mackerel tends to school in circles.

They are from the same family but different fish. These are Atlantic mackerel.
