Am I wrong to think that Merkel and the German flag should not be in this picture? I was stationed in Germany in the 80's. We trained constantly with their soldiers in preparation of the enemy rolling through the Fulda gap, and consider them allies and good troops, but she should not be in this picture, or a HUGE asterisks and arrow pointing out who is the head of the country that started it all. I know, it's over, it's been 75+ years, blah blah.... It just does not feel right.

I think about it often when I see German tourists on the beach here only a half mile from an existing artillery bunker on a cliff.

That said, I can't say they should still be paying for what a madman and their ancestors did. I will tell you that the holocaust is a routine subject on French TV as they want young people to remember. The French also have a lot of guilt about selling out so many Jews to the Germans during the Vichy government.

It was another time and hindsight makes it easy to judge.
Tough to say.

Blaming Germans for the Nazis and Hitler is like blaming white Americans for slave owners. Time to move on.

X2, but she shouldn't be there because she's not good for Europe, jmho.

for many Germans the end of the war was the end of the Nazi Nightmare , average German citizens were in their own hel.

although I am not sure they or their flag should be in the picture

there would be great symbolism to having the German flag and representative off to the side head down hands folded , saddened that they ever let things get so out of hand pledging never to let it happen again but I suppose allowing them in the picture is similar and shows unity now.

She definitely should not be in a picture remembering D-Day.Too many died or were wounded that day, fighting the Nazi's for us to ever forget or forgive.

Well, some good points here. But if we are going to continue to blame the German Prime Minister for deeds done by prior leaders 75 years ago, it means we should give Trump credit for liberating Europe. Hmmmmmm. Try that one, CNN.

Germany is the largest economy in Europe, assuming Brexit. France is second but the French president is less of a man than Merkel.

Really the Queen and prince should probably be the only ones in the picture , maybe some of the few surviving vets from those nations , but your right it is a picture with representatives of each nation involved and really just that.

the majority of the people in the picture weren't even born yet 75 years ago.

it should be taken only as representatives of the involved nations , but that does still raise the question . only allied nations ? or include Axis powers also? Why was Italy not invited to the party they had surrendered in Oct 1943 but were then occupied by Germany.

but not worth worrying over I suppose the importance is in remembering what lead up to WWII and what we should be doing to keep from repeating such mistakes.

remember Germany went from being crushed in defeat and believed so crippled it could never happen again in 1919 to invading other countries in 1938 , just 19 years form crushed in defeat believed crippled to occupying neighboring countries starting a second world war .

I think the photo was meant to convey the idea that the war(s) is over; we have all made peace, and the nations reflected by their leaders all being present in one photo demonstrates that we can all move on. Peace toward all, malice toward none.

Forgive yes that we should do, forget NEVER

My dad joined up right after Pearl Harbor with his best friend who was a 3 generation American of Japanese descent and what happened to him and his family should also not be forgotten though it seems most history books seldom mention it or what happened to a lot of German Americans during the war

There was a lot of wrong that was done in many allied countries maybe not the pure systematic evils committed by Germany, Italy and Japan but still wrongs that are seldom aknowledge

My dads and Ma’s family’s spent a lot of blood in that war my Ma lost 5 brothers and Dad lost 2 and one came back crippled from being tortured by the Japanese and seeing that group just gets to me in a very negative way not so much angry but close

There are way to many people that want to rewrite history for their own ends or gloss over or pick bits and pieces of negitive things to emphasize out of context for their own ends

Right or Wrong, the German Soldiers were doing their duty to "Gott and the Fatherland", and we honor German Kriegsmarine vessels and U-Boats found as sunken war graves. Same with Japanese war dead.

Oh how very truly stated. And with his tweets he does not even want to be there.
