My Grandpa was in the 14th Tank Battalion 9th Armored Division, the 'Phantom Nine'. He was in it man, Battle of the Bulge, and they took the Ludendorf bridge at Remagen, they made a movie about that. He only talked about his service for one whole day, with just me. After hearing of all the stories that day I asked him how he managed when he got back. He said when he was just about ready to go up the ramp to board the Queen Mary he stopped and gathered himself. He said he clicked his boots together and said from the time I walk up this ramp until the time I get back I am no longer me. When he returned he clicked his heels together again and said welcome home Jake. I'm such a sap, I cry every time I think of that, he was such a good man. Thank you Grandpa and thank you to all that served, hero's one and all!!
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Haven’t seen a WWII veteran in a restaurant in over fifteen years without paying for the entire party’s meal. The greatest generation, for sure. Both grandparents on my dad’s side were in WWII. That group has a special place in my heart. They literally saved the world.

My wife's great uncle was in some serious stuff when he was over there is now in nursing home..His son made this video about him and posted it recently. He also had two brother in service at same time.. I also have and older friend now in the nursing home. he landed to Germany day after shooting stopped so is not considered a combat veteran. He was an MP and lot of the prisoners he was guarding are the ones they hung after trials. My great uncle Louie and his brother Andrew both served in World War II. They were both dairy kids from Wooster, Ohio. Their parents had immigrated from Hungary a few years before they were born. Louie was a member of the 101st Airborne and jumped during the D-Day invasions while Andrew fought through Africa and Italy. I am very, very proud of them. My Great Uncle Louie My Great Uncle Andrew I lived in southern Nebraska for a brief time and ran into a fascinating barber in the town of McCook. This was around 2013. He told me a couple stories while cutting my hair. He said that he and a friend ran away from home, went to North Platte, lied about their ages and enlisted. Said he was running heavy equipment in the Philippines when he was 16 years old. He also mentioned that they had a really hard time keeping the native Filipinos from killing their Japanese POWS. Another story he once shared was after Japan had surrendered. He was sent to mainland Japan and he and some friends went to get a haircut. At that time the Japanese women still shaved men with razors. He said he was certain that they were going to cut his throat while they shaved him. I know some folks on here are from that area. Anyone else know this man?

These people were the best of the best. There is no honor too high for these heroes. These were true patriots. There aren't many like them anymore. Sadly, so many in the new, young generation are growing up with contempt toward America. Much of it being taught in some schools and many colleges.
We are told not to judge all Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but are told to judge all gunowners by the actions of a few.

My dad was at the Battle of the Bulge on opening , the Ruhur Pocket and Remagne Bridge. He was with the 99th divison , company B 393rd regiment. Hear a story from my dad's first sergeant , that they found those 15 german divisons that they couldn't find. They called SHAF and they sad they were seeing booger men. Then in a couple of hours they had crap shelled out of them and being over ran. Dad told me in 48 hour it was him and about 20 men left in his out of 242 men in his regt. Dad was a mortar squad sergeant , his nick name was chimney sweep , cause he put a round down a chimney. Dad died in 1987 when I was 21 , he never got to go to a reunion , but in 1994 , my brother and I did and we met the men that dad served with and a couple of them said if it weren't for dad they would of been dead. Back in 1980 I got my dad his bronze star that he didn't get when he served , I asked him how he got it , he said " I help 4 medics that were pinned down , and I gave the Germans something else to worry about because I was shooting back at them.

Finster, If you would like to meet some D-day Veterans, go to the D-day re-enactment in Conneaut, Ohio. You can see a small scale version of what the landing was like and there are usually a few of the veterans there. You can tell who they are because of the clanging sound when they walk. I had relatives, (great uncles) that were on the beaches and parachuted in on D-Day. On both sides of my family. They are all gone now, have been for quite a few years.
I BELIEVE IN MY GOD, MY COUNTRY AND IN MYSELF.

My Dad is 92 and was all packed waiting for the bus to the plane that would send him to the south pacific in 1945, but a little rough house football and he stayed here with a broken knee cap. When he had healed up he was sent to Italy as occupation force, no combat.

Some great stories here. My Dad knew a guy who was a Frogman in the Navy. His job was to go plant explosives on the hull of enemy ships, and was never expected to come back. He completed every mission, was discharged and came home to live a full life. Some can defy the odds. I believe his name was Leonard Wilhelm.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.
