Very nice mount.

I would be curious about field care required to preserve the hide and meat. Mountain Goats don't live near trucks !

^ all the hunts I been on we skin the goat out entirely and that is packed out. The meat then is packed out also. In almost all the mountain goat hunts I been on is coat weather, and frost in the mornings, if not snow and ice in some of them. Not sure if that is what you needed to know but maybe the OP can chime in on your question as well.

Looks great that is the hunt of a lifetime. Hoping to get a tag someday while I'm still able to do that hunt.

^ Billies often will have a yellow stained patch of hair on their hindquarters. The patch becomes more evident around the end of September and can be observed clearly from a good distance away. It is caused by how a male urinates.

Sorry I haven't been able to write back. Things have been hectic.

I got lucky to draw the tag as it was the 1st year I was eligible. In Colorado, you have to have 3 preference points to get into the draw. At that point, you have a chance. I'm a big proponent of you don't have a chance if you don't have a tag. So instead of applying for a Billy tag that generally takes decades to hunt, I applied for a Nanny tag. I was very fortunate to pull the tag. I made a couple of scouting trips that summer but as the sole parent of a 2 year old it was hard to get too far up in the mountains on those scouting trips. I took him with me on my back and we made some great memories during those scouting trips. We saw a few goats, always at a distance but there were plenty of goats to stay encouraged. The first time I went up on the hunt I took my 2 year old with me. Things didn't go well. He got cold and had a little meltdown after hiking for 2 hours in the dark. So we stopped and warmed him up. He was great after that but we were a couple hours behind schedule. While waiting for him to get warmed up and calmed down I spotted 7 goats with 3 of them being kids so I knew there were Nannies in the group even from over a mile away. By the time we got there it they had climbed up into places we couldn't follow. After that I had decided my son's first goat hunt would have to wait until he was a little bit older.
My next attempt to take a goat was the next weekend. I started up the trail and looked behind me. There were 3 goats up high in the peaks on the mountain behind me. So instead of heading up the trail I turned around and went where there was no trail and headed up into the red slide rocks. As a novice goat hunter I was unaware of how important established trails are. I scratched and clawed on all fours to get 5 steps ahead just to slide back down 3 steps. There were several times where I could hear the goats rolling rocks as they were leaving just on the other of the ridge from me. Despite my best efforts to sprint the last 20 yards on a 40+ degree slope, actually seeing the goats within shooting range eluded me. After spending the majority of the day I had a decision to make. I could either hunker down and wait for the goats to reappear and hope that I could find one and determine its sex or I could go back to my camper and my warm bed. I chose the latter. I spent the next day scouting other areas from my truck with my binoculars as my legs needed a rest. My next trip up the mountain I left the truck at 4:30 a.m. I was headed up the hill without a solid plan in mind when I noticed a headlamp below me and clearly off the main trail. I spoke to the owner and notified him of the trail location. I walked with him for a while and he mentioned that he had been up on pyramid peak in the past and seen several goats. Since I had no clear plan, that sounded like as good a plan as any. So I left him and headed for the top of the world. I hiked through the rock slides and kept heading up the trail. I was nearly to the last big climb when I looked up and to my left. I could see the bright white hair of a beautiful goat. I dropped to my belly and scrambled to get my pack off. I pulled my gun out of my pack and did my best hunched over sprint up the trail about 80 yards to get on the right level where I could see the goat. When I stood upright she was standing broadside at 40 yards. I still wasn't sure if it was a Billy or a nanny. When it turned and walked away from me I noticed it was a 2 holer from the back. She stopped at 60 yards and I put the crosshairs behind her front shoulder and squeezed the trigger. I was incredulous when she was still standing there unscathed. She hopped to the next ledge and I shot again. This time she dropped in her tracks and the easy part of the hunt was over. After celebratory pictures and a couple crazy white boy dance moves I skinned her out, boned her out and headed back down the mountain with all the meat, hide, and the skull. I arrived back at the truck at 10:30 p.m. worn out, happy and vowing to never go goat hunting again. Well, my 5 year waiting period before reapplying will be up next year and I will most definitely be applying again.

Nice trophy and great narrative on the hunt.

Thanks to everyone. One of my pals drew a mtn goat archery hunt for this fall. I hope to go up and spot for him. It's fun to be there even if you're not the one dropping the string.
