Been doing typically between 3:00pm and Midnights for over 30 years, with few exceptions.
A couple of times I was working days - between 6.00 pm and say 3.00 or so.... I'm rounding off here, we do 8 hours days with an extra half hour lunch, so 8.5 hours total... but some departments have different start/stop times.
I also did those compressed work weeks - like 4 x 9 hour days, then 3 days off [which were Mon, Tues, Weds...] man that was sweet !!
*But then that turned into a flex thing - not for me - but for the company to the point where I did not know whether I was coming or going... so I'm back to a strict M - F 40 hour week, on 2nd shift, and for me it's ideal - as I have all day to do what i want before I need to head in to the defense plant.
Funny thing though is although I'll be sound asleep in less than half an hour [01.30 am] and up at say 9.00 - 9.30 tomorrow [I'm one of those freaks who needs 8 hours of sleep...] when I am off, I end up going to bed around 11.00 pm and getting up by 7.30/8.00 am or so.
I've got some friends doing a noon to 8.00pm shift, I'd love to try that - but then again, with my current 3.30 start time, this gives me plenty of time to work in the yard, go exploring with my dog, etc... before I have to even think of getting ready for work.
I give you guys credit who do swing shifts, my father did that in NYC between 1962 and 1982 while he was in the F.D.N.Y. and I want to say his schedule was something like two day tours, to days off, then two night tours, two days off... and days was I think 9.00am to 6.00pm, while nights was 6.00pm to 9.00am.
He was a Lt in a busy Engine Company [E-17, Pitt/Delancy St] in the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the 1970s, and believe me - those crazy hours took a very serious toll on his health.....
