Every year bears rub and chew the power pole along side my driveway. We have watched some of them, they sit on their butt and rub, then turn head and take a bite. Highest bite is about 6 feet. First picture is from last night. Second one is from 5/6/2016 [Linked Image]

We can shoot 2 a year but only on private land. One in October and 1 in December. I shoot smaller ones (under 200 pounds) as they are edible. 600 + pound males not so good to eat. Boat belongs to my son-in-law. It was just there to get cleaned up/washed out, spent the winter in my barn. I only have a 12 foot rowboat, but that's all I need for turtle trapping . 3 bears in truck were shot a few years ago my me, my son and my Dad. Last picture with bear with metal ear tag, she was tagged 22 years before and had 3 cubs with her at the time. So she was 25+ years old when I shot her (no cubs with her that December).

Thanks, Aaron. 80 acres mostly wetlands. Most diverse hunting/fishing/trapping property in the state. I can shoot bear, deer, turkey. Flights of ducks, geese and woodcock land in or around the beaver swamp in the back. Any legal furbearer in the state is found here plus bobcats and fisher which are protected. I use the upstairs rooms of the house as my elevated woodchuck shooting stand. Closest house is 200 yards away, but no houses in the other 3 directions for almost a mile.

Mating season so the young and old males are marking territory and moving a lot.

There was a pole on a power line where I used to hunt. When you were very close to it you could hear a slight buzz. The bears chew and clawed it up far more than any of the others. I figured they expected it was bees, or some other insect, making the sound and were trying to get at them.

We had this problem at our cabin. Coated the pole with used motor oil and the bears left it alone.

Looks like a nice pinch point between the pole and fence to hang your snare. laugh

Eric,

I'll see your scratched pole and raise you a pole near my NJ place (within Hamburg Mtn WMA) that has been scratched so much that a third of the diameter is gone!

My guess is that it is in a location where the territories of several males overlap. They just cannot walk by it without raking off a few more splinters. NJPL is going to need to replace it one of these days.

If you do that, you will then have the most attractive rubbing post for feral hogs. I have seen trailcam videos where every feral hog in the area would rub on a creosote powerline pole. You might be able to shoot hogs in NJ.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

You are about forty minutes north of where I stay at a customer's vacation home on Lake Hopatcong. It is a nice area.

Eh...wot?
