I have a '18 Chevy double cab (shorter back seat, longer box than crew cab). So far, my overall gas mileage is 17.6 MPG, this is the total average since day 1 and through the winter with a lot of idling hours. On a standard interstate trip running 75 mph, it does about 21 MPG. This is with the 5.3. I just hit 24K miles today. Plenty of power for pulling stuff, but I have to say I am not a huge fan of the active fuel management system that drops to 4 cylinders at lower RPM.

New vehicles in general are junk. Wife has an 05 1/2 ton Silverado extra cab 4x4 4.8. Wouldnt tow our 20 ft camp trailer any faster than 55 on flat ground. At a meticulously maintained 135k its already falling apart...water pump, headliner, tie rod ends, insturment cluster to name a few. At this point it needs more work than its worth. Last chevy i had that was worth a (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) was gpas 89 2500...and thats a stretch. Best domestic truck i ever owned was a 77 3/4 ton chevy..paid 800 bucks for it invested just under 5k drove the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) out of it and turned it for a profit years later. My suggestion would be to find another good used trans for the one you got already and drive it into the ground. Dont waste your money on another piece of (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) that is designed to fail. If i can help it ill never buy another new rig. I could go on but ive made my point and further comments are sure to cause an argument from some (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) trying to defend the very engineers paid to screw them.

I have a 06 2500hd with a Duramax that will get 21mpg on the interstate driving 75mph. I pull a 35ft camper with it, have the power to pull anything you put behind it.

I'd be real leary about pulling 5800# with a half ton pickup. I have a 2015 with the 5.3. It has 80k and has given no problems at all but we pull a 3800# camper several times a summer and I have a gut feeling that the tranny is getting weak. A question for the techs...……..how expensive is a new/rebuilt tranny these days?

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I've had two 6.0's I put 335,000 on the last one with no engine issues. Changed the oil when the truck told me to.

It is what it is.

I've priced mine at around 1300 for a rebuilt. Labor would be 600-900 if I didn't want to do the old transmission bench press.

I also suspect the transmission being a weak link as I had to haul it in early on for replacement of second and third gears under warranty. But that was over 150k ago so maybe it was a fluke.

I would get 5.3 for just general use. I have owend a 4.8 and just found that if did not perform well and if it had to work it sucked fuel.

Diesel averages 30-35 cents more per than regular. I haven't penciled that out to see how that compares. Also I ve never owned a diesel so other than knowing they require oil changes on a set schedule and condensation in the fuel tank is bad I know nothing of their care and feeding, especially that DEF stuff.

I liked the older Diesels but DEF is something I don't care to mess with.

Diesels are great if you pull a load but totally unnecessary if you don't. The worst thing about a diesel is the stupid pollution crap and they all end up needing deleted before they will run right. J
Some guys with a little weiner drive a diesel just to make up for it. Jack it up, put big tires on it, and blow black smoke out the exhaust.

I figure diesels cross that line for me. Looking seriously at my needs I'm a 5.3 with occasional need for 6.0.

Drove half tons for several years finally bought a 3/4 ton love the clearance but you give up mileage in a gas engine
Currently driving a Ram 2500 Long bed... on the highway around 17 in town 13 but knock on wood with 4 wheel drive engaged the extra clearance on the frame has helped big time
