I have been told that is a no no... just a myth or should it not be done?

I always water in the evening, was told not to in the morning cause the water would evaporate before it could work its way into the ground.

Depends.
If mildews are an issue absolute no no. Wet leaves at night equals mildew. You want morning sun to dry as quick as possible.
But overhead water during the days losses lots of water especially if the air is dry.
Overhead water also splashes blight onto leaves.

This is why most commercial veggies are grown on plastic with drip tape under.

Best homeowner compromise, soaker hoses.

Sometimes when I’m really thirsty before I go to bed I think about how some people don’t water their garden in the evening because they believe it’s a no no. Then I drink a full glass of water and go to bed!

Yes I see your point but talking about a vegetable garden... not fruit

Does it rain at night ever? I water when I can but Warrior has good advice above.

A lot to consider, but I agree with warrior. Sometimes you just have to water when you can though and take the risk, especially working with sandy soil.
Cukes and squash seem more susceptible with late watering.

That's the rub. I've yet to find one that I can get more than a couple seasons out of.

+ 1 water in the evening. In addition to evaporation I heard the water molecules burn the plants in the sun.

I try to avoid watering once the sun sets. Usually it's late afternoon - sunset

You are correct. It is a no no. Definitely increased the chances of foliar fungal disease as well as root rot. Even mid-day watering can cause foliage to burn up unless watering from a dripper system where only the roots receive water.

Water whenever you need to and don't worry about it. While working in a greenhouse, I've watered plenty of plants when its hotter than Hades in there and the sun was beating down.

How much water should a garden get daily? I'm thinking of putting a timer valve inline on the garden hose. I read 1" per week but I just don't believe that's enough. Especially in sandy soil.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I would agree, looser the soil the faster it goes on down.I personally just look at the foliage.

Amounts will vary. I don't want to water if at all possible. So far this year I haven't done much of that other time water in new additions. I use cardboard around the plants and in the rows in between. Holds moisture in the soil very well, at least in our clay based soil.

If you really want to get fancy, you can set up your sprinklers/hoses to a moisture meter to really save on water and excess watering.

Of course if you're growing hot peppers. Put umbrellas over them.(not really but they really like being dehydrated to a point)

The humidity here at night is all they need.

That's the general rule though it can vary by species and stage of development. For instance melons need more water to size up but need a dry spell at maturity to sweeten up.
Sandy soil is a problem. My clay loam holds water well, to well in the spring, and a good once a week soaking is more than sufficient. If I had sand I think spreading that one inch over two or three applications per week would be better, though you may need more than an inch total as watering to shallow is bad as well. You want enough water to soak down into the root zone.
