Your going to get a lot of suggestions. Personally, I like a 220V mig welder, with shielding gas...It makes it easy to get pretty welds and you can do pretty and quality, as easy as ugly and shoddy, if you get a little training and some weld time .
Votech schools are a great resource, and you can even feel your way through it yourself in time.
A Hobart 190 mid-level mig welder is all I have ever needed, around $600.
Make sure you are working with weldable rerod.
IMHO 110V welders, or working without shielding gas wil leave you wanting more.

There's not a single trapping product I can imagine that can't be made, and made well, with a 140 amp welder and roll of flux core wire. But the welding snobs will be here in full force to say I'm wrong. Though I know more than one professional welder that will say the same thing. I agree, I have a cheapy one and it does everything I need for trapping. However, all that splatter is ugly, wish I had a real mig with a little more umph. Be nice to be able to make pretty welds and do heavier stuff too.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Been a welder for 13 years, so far everyone has touched on the same thing. You can get the job done with a cheap one, but save yourself the headache and buy a better unit. 220 if you have access to it, if you don't a Hobart 110 can do what you need. You just cant run them as hard. Also what everyone has said about the shielding gas is pretty spot on, using it will make your welds better. However, you can do everything with gasless flux core (be careful if you buy this, not all flux core is gasless). If you can find a welder local to you most of the time they would be happy to show you a few things (like how to set a welding machine properly) might cost you a beer or two.
If you have any technical questions PM me and I'll help out where I can.
It's a trappers life for me

i got the Hobart flux core and am happy with it. yea it spatters some thing bad but the welds hold and the critters don't care, 250 bucks was way easier to take than 600 or 800 for some thing i wont use alot.

45 year welder here,,,Your going to find in short while more projects to use it for and more people that want you to make things for them than you will have time for,,,get a small mig set it up for gas shielding and solid wire, practice and dont look back,,Stay with a name brand for getting-consumables and parts when needed your dollars will be well spent !! You dont need a 220 to do any thing you need once you learn how,,thats just dollars waisted if your only ever doing light weight work !!
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

Plenty of machine shops only have and use a Lincoln 220.
