It may just be "Normal" behavior for urban coyotes to show aggression toward humans as most rabies is expressed in the passive form in canines. Active or aggressive expression of viral rabies is rare (somewhere between 2-5% of the cases) and usually only surfaces when the disease is well spread in an animal population. Urban state like Jersey should have more recorded cases than a rural one though,,,,, so either case should be cause to remove a few local coyotes and have them tested..

Rabies is all thru NJ. Lots of dead coons, fox, woodchucks and coyotes on the roads now cause they are dopey. If 5% go nutso, 5% of our population is a lot of rabid animals. Saw a small bear about a mile from home staggering in circles, big white spots of flies eggs and 1000,s of flies buzzin around it. Came by next day and it was dead, buzzards eatin it.

Boy, that is some article.... reminds me of something I read this time last year in Westchester NY, same type of scenario too.

We are definitely seeing an increase of coyotes here in CT, and there are becoming more conflicts with humans as well.
The coyotes here have no fear of humans, and it does not help that the anti's are on the warpath regarding any kind of control measures being taken.

I was tracking one two weeks ago late afternoon [via kayak] that was injured - a pretty good one - via kayak, who was hobbling along the Housatonic Railroad track but then I lost sight of him, and I did not see him last week.

Pretty big dog too, could tell he was in pain - but can't trap in this area [or hunt for that matter] because this is an area where people hike.

It's no good when the numbers get all out of balance......
It's even worse when the anti's prevent us from doing what is right.

My goal was to find this dog, try and determine nature of injury, then call D.E.E.P. and see if I could have gotten permission to dispatch it, or have law enforcement do it.
Either way would have been fine by me.
