The 17 year old son of an old neighbor in California came for a short visit last week. He loves hunting, fishing and work. He's captain of his football and lacrosse teams, teaches young kids to fly fish and has an intelligence not often found in a 17 year old. It was the second time he came to hang out at the farm and work. We dismantled 100 yards of a 5 strand barbed wire fence that was downed in the brush, mucked out the barn and moved a bunch of wood. I almost went broke feeding him though. I can't imagine how some of you do it when you have two or three like him. I hope he comes back next year. There'll be plenty of work for him. And yes, he understands conservative thought and knows what the 2nd amendment is really about. Pete

Pete Are you sure he's from California? That doesn't much sound like one of those whack-jobs to me?

They’re just shouted down by those who do. Jealous, Pete. Not sure if I’m jealous of him for being able to come out and see some great country, or you for the labor help.

Funny story about this kid. He grew up around the corner from us and his dad was a customer in our fly shop. When I got the horns back from my solo Yukon moose hunt, I saw his mom walking him down the street and I called them to see the rack. He was only 4 or 5 and he said, "... wow Pete those are huge. How'd you get them...." Knowing his mom was not keen on hunting, I told him that I just walked up to the moose and asked him nicely if I could have his antlers. He believed me and they took off.
About 6 months later my wife and I were walking our dogs past their house and the whole family was sitting on the front porch. We walked up and Carson was cold to me and didn't jump up to shake my hand like normal. Then, looking down at the ground, he said, "Pete... I don't think you should kill any more moose...". I knew where it came from and just knelt down with a serious grin and told him that we'd talk about it someday when it was just the two of us. He shook my hand. The next time I saw him we had our little talk.
2 months later I couldn't keep the kid out of my garage learning to blow duck and coyote calls, looking at decoys and duck stuff. Just to bother his mom, when we closed our store and moved here I gave him the moose antlers for his bedroom. Now, he hunts, his father hunts and shoots handguns and the mom loves handguns and Tannerite parties in Montana.
One little gesture can go a ways I guess.
Pete
