Never could figure out why fishermen buy minnows with all the creeks, ponds and lakes that are full of them, and easy to trap a few dozen in an hour or two with a couple traps. But it is definitely a big business. Here people have commercial minnow traplines just like fur traplines or BMA's.Many times an old timer will pass on his minnow trapline to his kids.

They have made it in Manitoba so that all current licences are "Grand fathered' so when the licence holder passes on that is it.
Interesting that when you take out the big breeding lake chubs, you are actually hurting the production.
Jim is that a big circular minnow trap behind you in your Oscar finale.? those are the ones used in Manitoba.
Zebra mussel has created a real problem in Manitoba's waterways. No lake chubs in that pond just sucker minnows that's why we changed ponds that day, to many 6 inch sucker minnows great if there is a pike tournament but no good for walleye fishing in the spring. In the background is my dad's observation dome. lol.

Sucker minnows are the best to use in the rivers like Mattagami and Abitibi.Caught a lot of nice pickerel on sucker minnows. They stay alive on the hook better than any other minnow and sturgeon love them. Not so good where there is no current though. And we always want to hook sturgeon above all other fish for the fight.

A bunch of walleye fisherman use 7” suckers when fishing tournaments. They catch a load of 30” walleyes on them.
Cold as ice!

We have lake sturgeon here on the st Lawrence river but are not allowed to keep any .... We do catch some while ice fishing for walleye occasionally.....

Only Native people can keep them to eat,but they are the best fighting fish by far to catch on a line. Natives net them or night line them.

Pickerel is pretty good but its hard to beat some fresh hot smoked sturgeon right off the fire. Best eating size around 25 lb.There is a proper way to clean them to have good meat.
