The last week the gnats around here have been bad. Way more in number and annoyance than usual. They are the type that bite and continually get in your hair. I can't imagine AK and Canada.

Haven't had to many of them yet but it can get bad here with them. They are all most worse then mosquitoes. I was checking the June Berry patches the other day in tall grass and not a bug to be found. That will change with high water sooner or later.

TurkeyTime,
Get some vanilla extract out of the kitchen cabinet and rub a decent amount on your face, ears, neck, and any bare skin. It’s amazing how good it works on the gnats. Smells pretty good too!!

No gnats here, but I probably just cursed us. Mosquitoes have been surprisingly light this year so far. The deer flies are starting to get bad.

We got something here biting the crap out of everyone. When they bite they leave a swelled up place the size of a half dollar. A guy told me they was buffalo gnats. I don't ever remember seeing them before. Plus we got something else either chiggers or turkey mites itching me all over. And with all the water we have plenty of sceeters but they don't hurt half as bad as the gnats.

Chiggers are horrid around here! Anybody know how to kill them once they've burrowed their maggot holes into you?

My usual protocol for chigger bites is to itch them until they bleed and then they don't itch anymore. If they are buffalo gnats then we are in trouble. We have 10 buffalo in the county so they will just have to keep biting us.

Come over to NE TX and haul home a big load of fire ants. We have plenty to spare. They do a pretty good job of cleaning out chiggers and a fair job on ticks. Then you can start fighting the fire ants!

By the the time you start itching from chiggers, they are long gone. The itch comes from the tube which they created to get through your skin. They are the larval stage of a mite. We are just very temporary stooges, used for a quick meal so that it can move on to becoming an adult mite.
The only real remedy is 2 weeks of managed suffering. If scratching yourself raw is what you prefer to get you through it mentally, by all means, scratch away.

The best trick I know to work is somewhat preventative. When you return from an area known to be infested with chiggers, fill a small bowl with 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water. Strip down buck nekid. Use a warsh rag to cover EVERY bit of your skin (watch the wiener though). Once your skin starts to tingle, take a shower.
I guarantee this will work.

Nail polish over the bite mark, suffocates them

Found that out many years ago while working in Nebraska

I scratch them chiggers til they bleed too. Makes me feel a lot better and the itch goes away. Little black flies are about the size of a gnat but they bite. There's a chemical you can pour upstream from the problem area (golf course in our case) and it kills the larvae as they breed in the water. Just a few ounces of cure 10 miles upstream does the trick.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

People around here use Bug Soother. "Repels bugs, gnat-urally". For me this works better than vanilla.

I also had someone tell me Absorbine Jr. worked for him.

For the gnats use Buggins, have to reapply often but works well. Can also use equal parts water, vanilla extract and Listerine. Don't bother w regular bug spray, it doesn't even slow them down

Gnats, fruit flies and moths have been bad this year over here. Thankfully the moth numbers are going down.
