Any of you more experienced luremakes care to explain to me what you think muscaro musk should look and smell like? I've bought muscaro from 3 different places to compare, the 2 I got so far smell and look totally different to me. One is very thick , very dark and smells like it's a mix of sac oil, castor and a synthetic musk that's a little harsher that tonquin. The second is liquid with an amber color, a very weak smoother musk smell. I like the smell of the smoother one but it is very weak.

Folks have their own preference in making muscaro musk that is for sure. You will find some differences from one formulator to another. Some blend their own with 3 - 4 ingredients some sell a commercial muscaro that is available as well.

Some will have a syrupy consistency some more like tonquin color with a more fluid viscosity.

There is a big difference between the muscaro musks out there, as Bob pointed out. I'm only familiar with the ingredients in the one I make, which is Dave Edward's formulation. It contains 12 ingredients, not counting the base. It seems like a lot, but it comes out nice. It is very thick, like Backbreaker when it's cold.

Bob & Paul thank you for your input, much appreciated. Is there or was there at some point a "true" muscaro musk or odor that everyone is suppose to be trying to emulate or has it always been something that is created by combining different ingredients?

I don't know the answer to that.

Thanks Danny
Not sure how you came up with that but it was an interesting read.

those flowers were used by perfumers. somehow they hybridized. perfumers began imitating the scent. trappers began using it like a lot of other perfumers ingredients and techniques. perfumers were the first to imitate tonquin and ambergris also.
