I have a mix of dog proofs that were stored in a tote that got exposed to the weather
and moisture got in and rusted them up pretty good.
Boiled them in lye and then sumac dye.
I'm considering waxing them to seal out rust and corrosion.
Good Idea or Not ?
What negative issues might result from this ?
Will they function properly afterwards or will it be nothing but headaches ?
They are mostly coon daggers along with some dukes, grizz's, and z-traps.
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Guys that have waxed DPs say it ain't good, but if they are going into storage (which is the only time wax does much good) til the coon prices go up (could be long term) I say wax them good. If when you use them again they are finicky, just boil em ten minutes and the wax will come right off. . >I'd probably just use diesel soak now and car wash when the coon go up.

If you wax just use a torch to remove the wax on the dog end and the trigger notch and your good to go. If It were me I would just paint them.

I've always waxed my dog proofs, figured everyone did.

What the coon does to them is not relevant to what happens in storage. Rust prevention, be it wax, paint, grease, oil, driveway sealer is for when the traps are not being polished clean of rust by the animals, ie while in storage. When in use the animals provide rust removal. Pay attention.

When in use the animals provide rust removal. Pay attention. Well, I waxed all the DP's that had rusted while in storage. They were fine when I put them in the tote three years ago but I figure wind blown snow got piled on top of the tote, melted, and formed a pool of water in which they sat and rusted quite badly. Even the powder coated z-traps were rusted pretty good although I was able to clean them up with drastic measures. I was looking for a long term storage solution to guard against the unexpected. Didn't know if waxing would cause any unforetold issues so I figured I would ask the experts. thanks for all thoughtful replies. w

the ones I waxed then caught mice , hair trigger.
I think it is the trigger design , when waxed it is more sensitive than a pan trap where you set the pan tension , the DP has a freely moving trigger it becomes very easy to trip when waxed. but if you clean that off well it should be close to normal pull.
