Seriously? Why wouldn't you assess the surroundings? At least know where the exits and dead ends are. Fires, storms, power outage, active shooter, etc are all situations you need to be ready for.
It's just like defensive driving, though I doubt many people do that any more either.

From what I noticed in the video it wasn't so much situational awareness but more of environmental planning.

Situations are dynamic, always changing. You're not going to have blue prints and maps.

I agree though.....you should be aware of your surroundings and be mentally present. Not much bothers me more than being around people who move and stop as if there's nothing or no one else around them.

You don't need a blueprint for most places. A simple walkthrough at a store, a visit to the restroom, that'll give you a pretty good idea of the layout.

IMO, it's good for loved ones, especially the 20 and 30 somethings, who grew up in safe situations but now live in large cities. The naivety of this generation never ceases to amaze me.

See this all the time in the nicier neighborhoods of Milwaukee and Chicago. People raised in suburbia (including rurll surburbs) walk around lacidasical down the street in the middle of the night, face glued to the screen.

Heck a month or so a go my wife and I go to a show in Milwaukee. I pull the car around to pick her up after the show and some half a ditz opens my back door and hops in assuming I was her Uber. (Also how do you explain to the Mrs that the barely dressed blonde coming out of the back of the car was a misunderstanding? )

Next time I head into Kwik Trip for a soda I'll make sure I do a Situational Awareness study before committing. When I start worrying about what may happen when I leave the house to go to farm & Fleet I guess I'll stay home.

You're expecting people who walk into traffic or into open holes to take their attention away from the digital device that they are blinded by to be aware of their situation? The only thing they are aware of OR CARE ABOUT is what is being said about them online. Many believe they have to have their "smart" phone to live.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.
