If your vehicle is moving your are very safe. Buy fuel at the border. Secure your firearms. Don't stop till you get to the other side. I carried for a lot of years on my semi. I never told people I was armed. Gun lived in my suitcase till I parked at night or had to walk into a rest area or something. Better to be armed and alive than allow a bunch of bureaucrats to take the rights your ancestors risked everything they had to give you.

In today's world you're taking a chance no matter what you do. Some folks will just lay a handgun on the dash if they're pulled over...then it's not concealed. Some LEO appreciate that, some will freak out on you. My nephew in Nebraska was pulled over and had a gun laying on the back seat. A young deputy saw it and started screaming "he's got a gun!" They dragged him out and threw him on the road in sandburs and bullthorns. Sometimes you just can't win no matter how legal you are.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Gary in many states a gun on the dash is a FELONY.
New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, California, Illinois and others. You can not legally be armed no matter what you do.

When we travel I keep an unloaded pistol and a full magazine in a compartment in the back hidden out of sight, and don't do things that would allow a cop to search the vehicle. I've never had any problems or given it much thought. I also don't have a CCW because I refuse to pay for the privilege of tucking my shirt over my gun.

When traveling TO a state - state law applies. If your destination is IL, or if you will be stopping in IL, you have to follow IL law.
When traveling THROUGH a state - federal FOPA law applies (Firearms Owner's Protection Act). As long as you are transporting the gun locked and unloaded you are good to go. It can be locked in the trunk, a tool box, or other lock box but not the center console or glove box. And, Ammo must be separate from the firearm.

In Illinois the gun needs to be unloaded and in a gun case ! Ammo can be in the case or in the magazine and in the case as long as the mag is not in the gun. The gun can be anywhere in the truck or car, in sight out of sight , within reach not within reach, don’t matter ! If you run down the interstate you don’t have to worry too much as the state police for the most part are the ones patrolling and they along with the DNR wrote the law on transporting a firearm.
The law reads ( any firearm needs to be unloaded and in a case ) it then goes on to say more about ammunition and magazines and.......
I’m not much help when it comes to CC as I don’t believe I need to have more than the second amendment! This is all correct - that said, the People's Communist Republik of IL does NOT recognize CC reciprocity with any other state. We have the "smartest" nanny politicians in the country looking out for the serfs... [sarcasm off] SNIPERBBB has posted the website that will help.

Maintenance guy what good is an unloaded firearm locked in a tool box? Well... you could throw it at a bad guy... but your point is absolutely correct. That said, the center console in IL is recognized as a case. But you could be dealing with some local yocal who doesn't know much about the law so it's best to store it in a case.

Ohio resident going on a trip and towing a camper that will take me through Minnesota and Illinois. Ohio has reciprocity with the other states I will be driving through. Question: what method(s) do I need to use when traveling through these two states? I am guessing gun unloaded, locked in a case in the trailer with the ammo in the truck. Does anyone know for sure? LOL if that is how you carry it leave it at home !!!!!! Only thing it would do is if someone breaks in they may steal it.

You my be correct but a LE officer told me that if the compartment was part of the manufactured vehicle and was lockable then it was ok. But the clip has to be out and nothing in the chamber. Some consoles are not lockable and that is why lots of folks think they are not legal. My console on my Chevy has a lock.
