Anyone know how I could eradicate this stuff before it get out of hand? I have 2 large plots of this stuff on my hunting land that is getting out of hand. I have a pond in the middle of the 2 plots so spraying chemical may be a concern for the fish. This stuff is about 25' tall and baseball bat diameter.

Compact track loader should be able to make a big pile of that stuff.

Far as I know, it's almost impossible to kill. It will laugh at weed killer. Digging it up will work but you have to get it all. Leave one root and the stuff will come back.

Ran over a swipe of it with the brush hog about a month ago and I swear there's new stuff ten ft. tall in my tire tracks now!

The stuff is almost indestructible. Cut and dry it for firewood, learn how to make fishing poles, build a hut. That's about all you can do. Some of it grows so fast that Asians used to torture people by tying them down over a shoot and letting the bamboo grow through the person!

brush hog or mow them when they first come up
they will come back to some extent but if you keep cutting them. off young they will die out. eventually. be glad you dont have a kudzo infestation

I suppose someone more crafty than I could do some really cool stuff with them. The previous owner planted them as part of landscaping around the pond unfortunately or they wouldn't be here in the first place. I have this stuff along with some kind of ornamental lillys that grow in the water and whatever that grass is that grows in a clump about 10' tall. Wish he would've just stuck with the fish only and left the landscaping out.

Think of it as draining a battery, the roots are the battery.

Cut the power/solar panels/EVERY THING ABOVE GROUND.

It will sprout back, let it spend energy. But before it can recharge cut everything above ground.

Repeat until it gives up.

Also roundup does work on bamboo though not as well as triclopyr. I've about won my war with bamboo and it's only taken ten years. Would've been quicker if the neighbors were on board at fiirst and had eradicated their side of the bamboo patch.

The roundup just stunts it back. I used it prior to cutting to try to knock it back. As said it's a process of wearing it out.

If you have heavy equipment and can cut the whole patch or rip out the roots you can get a good kill in a single season but you can't let a single root or sprout remain or eventually you'll be back to square one.

Go to your local rental yard and pick out your favorite piece of heavy equipment.

Most bamboo has not been in the US long enough to seed yet. Most varieties have to be 65 to 150 years old to fruit. When it does seed, I think multiflora and bush honeysuckle will start looking like less of a problem, as birds establish bamboo everywhere.

If the run off won't fill up your pond maybe hogs ( they will till up the roots) or maybe for less rooting goats might keep them down after you cut it down and burn it off. I have no experience just thinking and sometimes I get headaches when I do that!

Cut it down and spray the stump portion with Ortho Max Poison Ivey Killer mixed with Dawn dish detergent.

Sounds like it may have some commercial value, might want to check into that.

Good idea, they surely don't bring in those Tiki torch sticks from overseas, but then maybe they do. Last cane pole I priced I walked away.

In that size they could be used for furniture. I took my R&R from the 'Nam in China, (Taiwan), not surprisingly they used bamboo for everything, construction scaffolding for one.

Yep - I always had a cane pole to fish with as a kid...
Got a new one every spring - the old ones were recommissioned to frog gigs.
