Happen to look at one of the Maple tree's in the yard and noticed this fungi growing on some of the branches and killing the branch completely. Cannot figure out what it could possibly be by doing some simple searching on Google, but I could not be doing enough 'in depth' detailed research. Has anyone ever seen this or has dealt with it on their Maple trees? Just trying to figure out if it's something that will cause me to fully remove the tree.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have the same thing on one of my oaks got one branch but hasn't spread in two years. I'd like to hear if anybody knows what it is as well. I am not sure the branch wasn't dying already and the fungi took hold after it was weak.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

I get the same or a similar looking fungus on branches of my sour cherry trees, in the very overgrown, heavily shaded, areas of my ditch. The fungus turns the wood into something you can just crumble away to dust with your hands. Sometimes there is little bit of living bark and wood opposite of the fungus still. I have been cutting off and burning infected branches and thinning out the thick areas.

I would suspect that this "fungal invasion" is a secondary opportunistic event. Something was likely wrong with the branch before the fungus began to do what fungi do. Eat dead wood.

I've seen that stuff a few times, but never on a live tree.
