I report my trapping income, and my expenses. I have several business ventures going on that use some of the same tools. I write off all my outdoor gear, trapping gear, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers , boats, you name it and it offsets my construction income. All the money you make goes into one pool anyway. It's a win win situation.
Anything I buy that can make a dime, gets wrote of or depreciated. I cant make enough money.

I'm jealous of you guys that profit from trapping. I've been losing money since I bought my first trap! If al the others were honest they would also be losing money. LOL I made money one year out of 50 but I don't think It made up for all the other years.LOL

If you have not been reporting the income in the past you may have an issue, maybe a significant one if fur income is a few grand or more per year and has been for several years. You can create a business and record income and expenses using a schedule C. Another way if income is not really too large and you don't want the hassle of doing schedules, keeping logs etc. etc. is list the fur income in the line where gambling income etc. is listed. Bryce 2X Income and sales taxes are not to be taken lightly. There won't be any mercy.

I ran mine as a business and claimed everything then got out of it for a while. Now it's all part of the farm - like selling hay or firewood. It all goes in a big pot and at the end of the year it doesn't matter much at all as far as taxes go but it is there just in case there are questions.
In my business I hired a CPA. He gave me a line of bull about how he would save me money and he charged me $1800 a month to make my monthly reports and make sure I was following all rules but not overpaying anything to the government. The IRS sent me a letter saying they did not get my monthly tax payment- 4 months back and they were fining me a late fee. I paid it over the phone. Next month - same thing so I called the guy and he told me to ignore it. His exact words were '' those people at the IRS don't know their butts from a hole in the ground''. So I called the IRS and talked to a polite and informative person who told me the next two months were late too and I should fire my CPA and get one that knows what he is doing. Best advice I ever got. I paid the fines- my mistake for hiring the guy. Found out he was having his college kid do the work from his dorm room - my business books!!!! The IRS has been honest and good to work with every single time I have ever had contact with them.
Just passin through

Good luck. Most trappers play Russian roulette with this and think they'll never catch on.
I set mine up under an LLC. Easy to do through the state. Takes a whopping 15 minutes online is all. Then get an EIN tax number through the IRS. (also easy to do online) All "income" goes into one category and all "expenses" (including Truck, insurance, gas, etc) in another. Most trappers would be surprised (and quit) If they knew how much they were losing every year. But doing this will make you a far better trapper....and when the IRS comes a knockin...you just show them your tax statement because it's all in there.
Running it as a small business is the only way to go, IMO. Some years you make money and some years you lose money. But even in the years you lose money, it offsets taxes on your normal 9-5 so you lose less than you think in the end. And when you need equipment, truck, boat, etc, you take it out of the trapping account. Problem is most trappers just blow their fur checks on whatever. Trapping under a business can be sustainable, but you have to treat it as a business and not just fun money.
The reality about the feds is this: Most of the questions they are asking, they already know the answers to...and why they are there in the first place.

Paying that kind of money for a service should have guarantee along with it. It was his screw-up, not yours, he should pay the fines......

Save and organize your paperwork as you go so you dont have to chase it down if this comes up again. Do the reporting right, follow the rules, have good documentation, no problem. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
