Anyone know how they caught them and have you ever seen one?? They would catch them then harvest some of the feathers and would release them.

I was told somebody was chosen to lay in a hole covered with branches and some bait on top. guy in the hole grabed the feet.

I always heard they hid in a pile of rocks on the buttes, then grabbed the tail feathers when they lit on the piles. Both ways would work, but I got alot of respect for those feet and claws!

Yep, both of you are correct with the research I have done, and what has been written is they grabbed their feet. Then plucked what feathers they needed and let them go. Some say they were laying down lookup or on one knee, with pine branches or cedar as a cover with gaps. They would have a rabbit or gut pile for bait on top of branches. Usually only on would be choose to complete the task.

Sometime I will take a picture of a dugout that I have and post a picture. Still can find the remains of their covering material in the dugouts when dugging down. Cedar takes many moons to rot and most will never rot in one man life time.

No, your research is incorrect. You don't grab an Eagles talon even from below. That beak would shread your hand/hands. It took two working together to do this. One under but not always.. Guide sticks were used and a loop like snare to catch the legs. From above a hide or buffalo skin was thrown over the snared bird then it was plucked.
It's all too romantic, most times they just killed the bird. Plenty more wher that came from.
As it was told to me.

They made a pen of sticks like a fence, put a large bait inside the eagles gorged and did not have enough room to take off when they were so full!

I have only handled one bald eagle. I have handled a lot of hawks and a few owls and falcons. I helped in coping their beaks and nails. The hawks, falcons and owls do not try to get you with their beaks, when you grab both legs. I would guess, you could safely grab an eagle by both legs, if you quickly turned it upside down and kept the wing tips away from your face. Taking a wing tip to the eye could probably blind you.

Diane got her face bruised and cut by the wing tips of a broad breasted bronze turkey. I suspect an eagle could do similar damage. I know geese can.

Many times I have seen eagles (both kinds) eat till they couldnt fly...or at least not take off! They love canines, and every body pile was always discovered almost immediately. Seen as many as 10-12 eagles on carcass piles, squabbling over what was theirs! lol

Say what? look at the feathers used in the head bonnets they are golden eagle feathers. As far as the catching Im sure it was done more than one way, I have seen the trench pits though and doubt it was hard to get one close enough to grab.

Eagles are easily snared. As a matter of fact you need to be careful not to catch them when snaring fur at jackpots.
Eagles will land in a clear area and walk into the jackpot on your walking trail. That is why we never set a snare on the walking tail when jackpot snaring in the fall.

logger coffey >>> No, I'm not trapping them, just ask if anyone knew how they did it, or if they have seen an old dugout that natives made to trap them. I have some that were made back in the 1800's I will get some pictures sometime.

Eagles use to be competition for muskrats and would steal rats trap and all back in the hay day of muskrat trapping. You can imagine that they were not popular with the trappers.

If a guy could find an old nest tree there probably some classic old rat traps hurried under all the piles of bones. From the air I have seen trees with a nest and circles of white 50' around. Those nests must have been used for a long time.
