My understanding of the meaning behind a headdress is much different than what’s been posted so far. I know trapping or shooting them has caught on in more recent times as the demand has increased for traditional clothing for pow wows and other ceremonial purposes. I was always told that a headdress makes a powerful statement because the feathers were given to an individual based on his accomplishments in hunting, battles, leadership etc A deserving person would have a collection of feathers that reflects their accomplishments in life and a collection large enough would show that the individual was deserving of being a leader. I’m sure a couple of you will discredit this idea as it is different from your own but I’m sharing this because it’s what I was taught. I’m in no mood to debate so take my comment with a grain of salt.

Ryan, that's what I've always been told also.

If a guy could find an old nest tree there probably some classic old rat traps hurried under all the piles of bones. From the air I have seen trees with a nest and circles of white 50' around. Those nests must have been used for a long time. WOW! Now that would be something to explore.

My daughter was Involved In some eagle studies here in WI. She climbed lots of trees and checked out nests. She supplied me with 50 or 60 fishing lures. Never found any traps though.

That is interesting. So, how do you think they collected those lures? You think they just find them laying on shore lines or what are your thoughts?

When I was a GP... I learned what hurt as bad as bare knuckles or a club was … Canada Goose's wings, a Swans wings and most of a Bald Eagle … I had opportunity or should I say the obligation … rescuing the last three birds many times, especially Canada Geese. We did have one occasion where we had to rescue a flock of about 40 Swans that had landed in a pool of water in a plowed corn field. When evening got there they tried to take off and there feet clog with mud and froze and they couldn't fly. 5 of went out in the field and almost got stuck ourselves. Eventually, we got them as well as ourselves out of the field. I had to rescue 2 injured bald Eagles. They weren't real happy about being handled. I lost the finger tip of a good pair of leather gloves and had numerous rips in jacket and scratches on my arms from their talons and beak..Handled too many geese to count. They all beat the devil out of you with their wings

The Eskimo’s made a polar bear trap that was similar except they dug a hole in the ice and put a fish in it. When the polar bear bent over to get the fish they snuck behind him and kicked him right in the ice hole. No, no, no... You dig the hole in the ice and put peas around it... When the bear stops to take a pea you kick him in the ice hole. Mike

Anglers catch fish and some of those fish break off and carry away the lure. They all die if they can't shake the lure. These fish float to the surface and the eagles carry them away to their nest. Eagles are for the most part scavengers. From what my daughter told me they were all still In the nest so eagles aren't much for house cleaning.
