Well finally something I know something about.
I have used a straight razor since the 70's. There is a slight learning curve involved but nothing that will kill you. The most difficult thing is keeping the razor sharp. But with practice, works great. Quality steel razor (I like DOVO) from Germany. Expensive, but will last a life time. I have 5 that I rotate daily.
There are safety razors available also. The best brands in my opinion are Merkur and Muhle. These razors have been my go to razor for daily shaving anymore. Safety razor blades have 4 sides and last a long time. The price is very cheap also. Less than .50 cents on up. I buy in bulk. 100 razor blades for $10.00 or so.
Try going the Safety razor route first, I believe you will be very happy with your decision.
My boys have been using one from daily face shaving to shaving their heads.
Read and look these things up on google.....
My DoVo Best Quality 6/8 wasn't bad... Right at $100 or so. Where they really get you is the strop. I opted for the 3" wide strop and it was nearly the same cost as the razor. Of course with proper care both items will outlast me. Mike

Dads old safety razor for cheeks and neck. When I was still in the service gillette mach something 3 blade. One trick to get them to last a while and keep there edge. After you rinse them out take a little spray bottle with iso alcohol or denatured and give it a good spraying and put it up. Really makes a difference on how long they last J

Gillette Fusion, I change blades about once a month.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Never had a straight razor or a clip razor touch me, grew up with a rechargeable electric razor, not changing now, seems to work fine for me, last all year before I need a new head, new set of blades is about 28.00, just bought a new one, last unit lasted 8 years before it would not take a charge any more, seems I saved a lot of money using one of these compared to buying blades if I used a clip handle one.
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

I don't understand the science behind it but will give that a go, thanks.

Going Barbisol. I'm done with Gillette due to their marketing. I don't agree with what they are supporting so I'm not supporting them any longer.

I have to look, but I think mine is made by Stihl and sounds like it's a 4 smoke.

Bic twin blade. years ago, I bought out a fellow who ran a flea market. I purchased about 600 razors($15.00 bucks) in the package and 12 years later still have more then enough. I figure should last until retirement and then my hair and beard will grow long. Sarge

Riverotter, Go for it. You will never regret it. Either a Straight Razor, or Safety razor ... Should last a life time. Makes you slow down and enjoy the moment, relaxing and going through the Evening or morning ritual. Finally got the picture to work....

I clean up my cheeks once or twice a year for some really special occasion that comes along. I use my grand dad's straight razor when I do. I've worn a full beard since Clinton's first term.
