They’re becoming quite a problem in some areas here.

We have had the black headed buzzards for years, and yes they will kill...

Not only calves, but sheep and goats as well...

There needs to be a season on them... year round, no bag limit...

Good Luck and God Bless you and yours,

bulletbox,
TEXAS

Even sheep are smart enough to shade up when it gets over 100....

I believe they can be taken care of by the department of USDA wildlife services if anyone has livestock losses due to them.

Had Black Heads kill small coons and possums in traps and mess up deer feeders.. There ever where down here, be 50 of em eating on a dead rat in the road and won't get
out of your way. Feds can't even get bird management right and people want to turn Heath Care over to them.

Did you read the article? Under a depredation permit the farmer and/or his agent can handle it. There's lots of us out here in that business. USDA WS is a taxpayer subsidized rogue agency competing with the private sector.

No problem to get a permit to kill them two of my friends have them to shoot them. The school I worked for they were roosting on the roof of the gym at one of the elementary schools. The buzzards were pulling the roof off so we got permission to shoot them for a period of a month. Think we killed around 45

No, I didn't waste my time reading the article. I just seen the theme about being federally protected and knew that USDA WS could get permits to help with certain critters.

As far as WS services competing with the private sector I don't see that happening out here. They don't solicit for jobs they are contacted by the party. A certain county or state doesn't even have to contract with them. There's a lot of areas out here that WS isn't even contracted or used. Certain counties out here contract with WS to even out the cost for the ranchers because it's assistance they ask the commissioner's for.

Here in the east to definitely compete with the private sector even to the point of using unscrupulous practices.
However, in light of their seeming incompetence depredation permits which once were issued almost exclusively to WS are now easily come by.
When I first started any call made to US Fish and Wildlife in Atlanta to apply for a permit somehow got back channeled to WS and resulted in a lost job to them. Not so these days.

Wonder if there is some way of getting rid of Wildlife Services? Anybody have a thought on this? Or at least pressuring them.

I remember them being a problem back in the early 70s when dad was running 60 head of woods cattle.

"Vultures are valuable to the ecosystem." Won't maggots reduce dead animals to nothing almost as quickly?

I sure hope you are kidding. I would have sped up to see how many I could hit. It's one of the few legal ways you can kill them.

Got 'em here as well - the land owner I trap on has had real problems with them.
