Susan and I live in East Tennessee, our quickest way up out of the valley heat after a day of yard work is thru the 'tail of the dragon ' . World famous twisty road, our back yard. Anyhow, when my floorboards would 'tinkle'(just barely dragging ) I'd get a nudge in the ribs, when the supports under the floorboards would start dragging I'd get punched in the ribs. When the rear tire slightly lifted and cherped I'd get punched harder. Well, no bad butted biker such as myself is going to take that bull from the second string seat warming passenger. Heck no! Get off my bike! Here's yours!. By God, I'll ride how I want now! By God! Now I've slowed by 35% and am wearing the mirrors out. Am I going to fast? Will she kill herself trying to keep up with me? By God! Oh just By God. Remind me to tell y'all of the time she got a bee in her bonnet & I cussed her like a red headed stepchild come to borrow money.
Not as bad as I could be, not as good as I should be.

We went down a few years ago to ride it. There was a group of 20 bikes. Only one of us had ever done it before. We were sitting around a camp fire the first night and the guy who had done it before brought out a new set of pegs and started to replace his. The one lady asked him why he was doing that he said; "My old lady gets cranky when sparks start flying out from under the bike going thru some of those turns." The look on her face was priceless.

Good friend of mine crashed his Harley the other day. Had a lady friend on the back. She got lots of hide scraped off and a broken shoulder and ankle. Buddy broke his neck. He will heal up fine but has to wear a basket on his head for a few months. Said bike got a death wobble? in a curve. Not sure exactly what that is but Im glad he and her will both be ok. After some heal up time.

318 turns in 11 miles - atleast thats what the Tshirt says.
we do an annual ride with some friend every year - this year, due to whatever reasons, we are doing the Parkway again.
I'm hoping we can cover the whole thing - the section between asheville and cherokee is my favorite for riding.
last time we were down that way, there was a Dodge Viper group thing going on. Counted over 200 go by before we stopped, pretty cool to see all those.

The death wobble has puckered me up 3 times now, I've only experienced it at speeds above 80 mph in curves while hitting a slight bump. Thank God for my dirt bike days, the only save all three times were to hit the rear brake while down shifting and putting all the throttle to it I could. Until you experience a tank slapper ( handle bars want to hit each side of the fuel tank, quickly) you would just not believe how violent it is. The solution is transmission braces.

It is said that the Tail of the Dragon (Hwy 129) has 311 tight turns over 11 miles of winding twisting narrow mountain road. Sally and I have been thru there several times on our Honda Goldwing touring bike. Its a scary ride for sure on those decreasing radius turns. Last time we were there, we were above the clouds, roads were wet. Something about riding along the edge of the pavement with no guard rail looking straight down for hundreds of feet makes me nervous. I probably had a death grip on the bike. Beautiful country up there. All of the Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful. If you get up that way, be sure to stop at the little motel at the bottom of the run and look at the pictures on the wall of the crashes that have occurred on the tail over the years. The new side of the parkway is finally open, the views there are the best I've ever seen and I've seen just about all the U.S. has to offer.
