Looking for suggestions on a whitetail hunt in that General
Area. I like the area up there and the big bodied deer. I hunted in
Ontario just acrossed the border in the rainy River
District a few years ago and really liked it,

I can't help you in that I have never hunted that part of the state. I do know a guy that grew up near Hallock and he hunted there his whole life up until a year ago and they shot a lot of nice deer in that area. Unfortunately for him his parents passed and his co-heirs wanted to cash out so the land is no more. Hope you hear some more info from some other folks and have a good trip.

I would look at heading up to Kittson county. It's a cool part of the state that is sparsely populated. Terrain is a mix of farmland and woods, and there is some public land. There's some big deer up there.

I will look that county up and see what's available for lodging and public land, wouldn't mind
A outfitter or semi guided hunt/lease if anyone knows of something to that effect in the area.

There is a ton of public hunting ground in NW MN. A lot in the big forested areas and a lot on the fringes along the farm zones

I’d recommend staying on the edge of the farm zone. As mentioned, Kittson County, also Roseau, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Polk, Red Lake, Pennington to name a few. Much of these areas will have a two deer bag limit this fall I’m sure, you could shoot a doe for meat and sit on a buck of your choosing. One has to purchase the bonus tag, it doesn’t come free. If you come your license is good for the whole state as long as there is an open season. Well except for a small area in the SE part, they are special. There is a lot of deer in the farming areas up here, a lot! Big bucks not as much but they are there. This is rifle country and we hunt right in the peak of the rut, couple that with winterkill and timberwolves deer have a challenge making that 3.5 plus years to trophy size but they do it,.

We also have a couple NWRs that allow deer hunting, Agassiz and Glacial Ridge both with high deer densities. Both with quite a bit of state land in the vicinity.

There will be competition on these public land areas but I wouldn’t say it’s terrible.

I don’t know of any one that guides

And don't you forget it either, lol. I shoot 2 or 3 deer if possible, and never let a young buck get so old it doesn't taste good.

Farmers feed the deer here.

They are decent sized too I think as Les eats venison about 6 days a week and then takes a break and eats walleye on Sunday.

You can eat it more unless you plan on getting pregnant

Thanks for the info. Steve I will be sure to check into the
Areas that you mentioned. Is the rifle season always early in the rut in Minnesota?

I found a place on Craigslist that
Has leased land and is taking bow hunters for the first time this
Year out of Clearwater county. The website and pictures all make it
Look pretty good but Hesitant to spend the money because it's his first year.

That is very good country NE for deer. a member here Bucksnbears knows that country like the back of his hand. I would send him a message with your questions. There aren't many folks down that way he does not know so his input would be valuable.
I have been there and can tell you the locals are very protective of their deer. Hard to get on a lot of land so this outfitter better have good connections.
It opens up a bit more I think towards Red Lake Falls and up thru Thief, but keeping near a mixed crop/woods habitat is your key. Lotta big swamps up there a ways.

Hard to find an outfitter in that area because it is not known as a place where hunters from outside the area want to go hunting. It would be a real struggle to get enough clients to keep an outfitter going unless they really put a huge amount of time into protection large tracts of mixed bush with farmland, planting food plots, etc. If you did all that, you would cut into your profits to the point that it would be hard to make any money charging what people are willing to pay for a whitetail hunt.

They have big bodied deer, but people who travel to hunt are looking for antlers not big bodies.

There is so much state land in my neck of the woods that an outfitter cant guarantee a hunt without competition. Any body can go anywhere, so ...no outfitters that I know of. There is a strong tradition of locals hunting too, for themselves.
