I get leary on wax dirt in pattern refusals. You get this dry looking spot over the trap, especially if you top dress the pattern. So you end up having to fan out the wax dirt over the entire pattern to eliminate it. Let's face it, it's hard to make yourself do that as being cheap, you don't want to waste the dirt. Ive had good luck with bedding it in wax dirt, then taking a wisk broom and putting 1/8" of dirt around it on the ax dirt. Thin enough for the coyote to crack if ti freezes and blends in nicely.

I think when they refuse the trap bed it's because it's different. Once frozen they will dance all over it. That's my thoughts anyway. Like Sniper said, we are cheap.
My friend Coldhand coined it good when he said, If wax smells like crayons, it's been over heated and will cause problems.

To avoid scorching when using the mixer method, buy a laser thermometer for under 30 bucks, and never ever get the dirt above 160. the melting point of most wax is 140. Boones correct the solar method is best, but you must have full sun for at least 4 hours in the warmest part of the day. Iv'e used both methods for me the mixer works best for volume. But ya gotta watch the temp..

One of those is on my list of tools I want. Handy for a lot more than wax, like frozen water lines.

Top dress with sounding natural dirt so It looks natural. It just takes a light dusting with a whisk broom to make It look good.

To each his own , I don’t keep the torch lit after the dirt is hot. Typically only takes about 4 or 5 minutes with the torch pointed kind of towards the rear of the mixer so as to keep any fumes or gases away from the opening . I usually only do 4 or 5 gallon of sandy dirt at a time and do this during warm weather. Low humidity and dry dirt seem to make the process a lot quicker.
P.s. I don’t add the wax until after I shut the torch off !
