What I'm looking to do is suck water from a small creek to water some trees. A distance of 50 feet away and about 10 feet of rise to watering spot. I wouldn't use this pump much and would most likley be able to water in less then one hour. Can anyone educate me on trash pumps and what I need in my description of use. Here is one in Harbor freight below and can you tell me what is meant by the specs that it shows in Head Lift. How high can I push water up hill with this unit? So kind to get, how big to get and where would be the cheapest place to purchase one?

I can't say how high it will pump, but 10' sounds very doable, but you shouldn't need a trash pump, those will pump solids up to whatever size the specs say, and that adds to the cost. A regular clear water pump is cheaper, put a screen on the intake to keep trash out, or suspend it in the water column. You will get a lower gpm the higher you try to push it. If you have electric close by, you can use a sump pump, then you don't have to mess with keeping a gas engine working with ethanol fuel.

Just get you and electric sump pump. They make one that a garden hose fits onto

No juice (electric) even close to this area. I don't want to buy a generator real bad either just another thing to set around. When out of power NO big deal for me, I can leave it or love it when I don't have power.

The water is very clear so no issues with debris and can put a float/weighed end on it. So I would be looking for just a gas powered water pump, right?

I used a sump pump that the garden hose screws onto for years pumping hog water. You won't need the more expensive one with the float switch. Unless you put a check valve in it the water will run back into the source when you turn it off, which is great in cold weather so line don't freeze. If electric is not close a small generator or 12v inverter would work.
And I've used the 2'' trash pumps for years but I am pushing water 1300' at at least 30 ft lift. So I'm sure the one inch would do your job fine.

Most pump specs have a performance curve that show how many gpm it will pump at different lift distances. This pump doesn't show that. It says that it will pump uphill up to 65 feet (Maximum head lift: 65 ft.) but there is no way to know how many gallons it will pump to this height or any other height.

Intake head lift is 19 feet so it can draw water up to the pump if the pump is 19 feet above the water level.

Since it is a clear water pump, you will need to be careful that it doesn't suck mud, leaves, etc. into the pump. A trash pump would handle solids in the water.

And, if you can find a pump curve, know that the friction of water moving inside the hose and turbulence at bends in the hose use up a lot of the power in the pump lowering the output. The rule of thumb that I use is that I'm always going to get half or less output than the pump specs say I will. So, I oversize pumps.

If I'm using a lot of hose, I'll actually calculate (or at least estimate) the friction loss in the pipe.

That one should do the job for you rather well. For many year's when I owned a water well service company I made worse than this work for folks . Just remember that leaks aren't your friend with either a jet pump or in this case a trash pump a quality foot and check valve is also needed .
You need to remember that this pump or even a jet pump will only lift water so high but it will push it further, with it only moving the water 50' or so if it were me I'd go with a larger diameter pipe because of friction loss, if that's not a problem or concern stick to the 1" but as I mentioned before I'd still install those other two valves also.

Allan >>> Would you recommend a 2" trash pump instead? Also where would you install the checks? One right off from the pump?

Allan >>>> this one might be better with more lift and HP.

Did you consider just running a hose farther up the creek and siphoning the water down to where you need it? It would be cheaper, lighter to carry and just as effective if the creek has enough fall. Just let gravity do the work for you.

^ I have thought about that. I have not tried that here but actually have done that similar thing from a irrigation ditch before. The terrain is different in this application but mostly would work. The reason for a pump, that I'm thinking is I have a small field that is higher and I might be able to flood a little of that also. That is a great thought though. Thanks

If the one inch is like the two inch it has a flapper that acts as a check valve in the pump and helps self priming. But you will be happier to add a foot valve on the end of your suction line also. If your suction line is very long and far to the water you may have to have a line that's pretty good or it will suck together. I use fertilizer suction hose. If its just a short piece light plastic pipe might be ok. Trial and error.

I can set the pump within 5' from the creek then about ~ 6' lift up to small opening meadow edge where I want to plant some trees. When I get back to ranch this week I will do some footage of lift to see what I actually have.

That pump will be fine. Use the 1" suction and then use 3/4" garden hose.Don't know if you are filling a tank and then pailing it on the trees or just using some kind of hand nozzle. have been using a 1" and 2" HF pumps for yrs. Just make sure you use some stabil on the last tank of fuel for the season.
