With the multi uses of the skunk iv been thinking about targeting some skunks this season. There isnt much info out there that iv found for specifically targeting skunks. What kind of traps do you use? What type of sets? What are the best baits? What type of locations do you look for to find skunks?

Cages work well, cat sets work well. Fatty or sweet foods in the cage skunk essence or a skunky lure work for footholds.

There's some good info in the archives

For specifically targeting skunks and not wanting an assortment of other animals, its hard to beat a tube trap in my opinion.

Cages, you don't have to use a full sized cage either..(preference). I like to cover my cages a with a piece of rubber, luan or 1/4 ply. Keeps them calm and limits their exposure to people, animals etc and is a lot easier to handle on pickup..less they see the better off you are. I use our own skunk bait/lure. For location If you aren't seeing any sign, I'd throw out a trail cam with the bait you plan on using in the area you plan on trapping to see what comes along. Critter specific "bait/lure" doesn't exist yet, all about the odds and what comes by first. There are odors that skunk are more prone to committing to, but the chance is always there for animal interest. jmo, imo, imho

Plan on smelling like.skunk and everything you own smelling also. The wife might not like it much either. Some guys say there is no smell but they have just went nose blind. I don't care how many you trap and handle, you will get some smell on you.

Wish I had more time to trap....

The only time I ever really targeted skunks and possums was when trapping coyotes. About 3 days before I was going to set coyote traps I would make me some tunnels out of chicken wire that would fit a 110 . Then back off away from my coyote route but still in general area I would at least thin out as many of the skunks and possums I could before putting the more time consuming coyote traps in.
On the chicken wire tunnels I would cover them over with weeds and leaves or even a feed sack, something quick and simple, usually kinda block one end with a 110 in the other end. I used a lot of double spring 120's.
Skunk pelts and their liquid seems to have its up's and down's like every other market.

TDHP and Strike2X, good points.

I cover my cages with black moisture or weed barriers. I've even used carpet, cardboardand black trash bags in a pinch.
When I trap then in the city I like to use chunks of fat, bananas or fruit loops. Cat food works too but then you have a cat clogging up the cage.

Dirtdogia, catching them is the easy part dispatch is another issue. Make sure you have plenty of skunk odor solution ingredients ready to go especially if you have a spouse and kids.

Locate the dens and trap them there.Densites common like bigfoot said.Skunks using dens leave identifiable sign.

Skunks are fairly self explanatory, make notes of road kill, there is a reason they cross were they do. Set the ditches where legal.
Hay stacks/ abandoned houses/shelter belts will produce well in your area.
Covered cages/tubes/plasti-catches help with the potential wrecks.
I run more and more 2 door walk through tubes on trails and in culverts, but single doors produce just as well. I like paste type baits smeared on the roof of a tube. Rodents are the biggest enemy, they will eat or pack off most kibble/dry type baits.

Learning a skunks mannerism's will help in production capture and knowing just how too prevent the wrecks.

I just can't see running cage traps when BGs are more effective .

220's work great, but beagles can be a problem. 155 or 160 probably better.

Don't know your restrictions on land there?

Body grips on the ground bad idea, too much much chance of killing a cat or dog.

You don't need a big bodygrip to nail skunks, but you do need one with very strong springs and good clamping force to kill them quickly.
My favorite skunktrap is the sauvageau c-120 magnum with strike bars.

We can run everything up to a 220 on dry land and 330 have to be submerged halfway. Iv been trapping for several years and put up my fair share of coyotes and have not one caught any dogs so i think ill be fine on the. My state has a leash law

#1 coilsprings or longsprings are plenty to hold skunks, or cage traps. Skunks like most anything that smells of food, especially stinky tainted stuff or fruit. Dirt holes or rugged cubbies for sets.
