Is it necessary to boil snare cable in baking soda to remove oil or can it just soak for a day at room temperatures?

I don't know if just soaking will remove the lubricant but suspect it will not.
But, IMO it's not necessary to boil cable at all , unless you wish to remove the cable SHINE. IMO and experience a quick boil in baking soda to remove the exterior cable lubricant and shine does very little, if any, damage to the interior cable lubricant. If wish to just remove the cable shine only do a QUICK boil in a baking soda solution, 2 or 3 table spoons per gallon of water, to reduce excessive cable lube and remove the shine. By quick I mean 5 minutes or less. I have no doubt a lengthy hard boil of 20-30 minutes may cause serious removal of interior cable lubricants reducing the life of the cable.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I just hang mine outside for a few weeks...Then spray paint. Boiling is a waste of time, especially if you're gonna paint em.

All the boil in baking soda does is make the galvanized coating oxidize faster, hanging out side for a month or so will also oxidize the galvanized coating. Soaking in white vinaigrette will also help speed up the oxidation.

I like to let them oxidize outside for a half year to that dark color. I have never waxed a snare yet, but that's when I would do it.

This is one of the great and frequent debates of trapperman.

If you do decide to do anything to them, just don't double dip them in Formula One snare dip. I can say from experience that it is a bad idea as the locks don't like it.

I don't boil my cable at all. for those thinking of using vinegar, word of caution. it will continue to work on the inner strands and weaken them over time. I use to use vin then boil in baking soda and still have bad cable the next season. outside looked great but inside bad.

I like to dye and wax snares, since they may be out for a couple or more seasons before making a catch.I don't activate all my established jackpots the same year,I do so on a rotational basis.Somemay sit for a season or two before getting activated and wax protects them inside and out when done right.
If you just use snares for one season, and pick them up then dipping in flat rustoleum cut half and half with naphtha is OK.
If you are unsure if your snares have deteriorated on the inside over time you can check them by bending them a few times at the ferrel. If a couple strands break, your wire is brittle, and I would recycle the hardware on new cable.

I don't claim to understand the chemistry involved, but it sounds like the shine is on the cable for a purpose, to protect the cable. You can remove the shine and start the deteriorization of the cable, or you can cover the shine with dye or paint and preserve the protective quality of the shine.
