If you like the outdoors and adventure, this book is a must-read. A true story from 1941/42 and quite an adventure (albeit a grim adventure), for a group of Soviet prisoners who escape a Siberian labor camp and walk out of Siberia, into Mongolia, through the Gobi desert, into China, Tibet and over the mighty Himalayas (in winter), all the way to British India. They suffer unimaginable conditions and hardships, with regards to weather conditions, food/water needs, constant dangers, all the while forming a nearly unbreakable bond with each other. A story about adventure and friendship and outright survival. Not giving anything away that isn't on the back of the book, but this was a recommend from Gulo on here and I finished the book in just a few days after starting it. Normally I casually read books and take a while to finish them, but I couldn't put this one down. It's on Amazon an reasonably priced.

I believe there is a movie as well. Ed Harris was in it. A good story either way!!!!

I certainly agree Eric. To put the trek in perspective (same latitudes and same distance traveled), it would be like walking from Fairbanks, Alaska to Mexico City, with basically nothing but a junk Russian axe and a dull knife, and having to cross 300 miles of sand desert and the highest mountain range in the world. Sound like an adventure?

Read it a couple times. Great read! However, I’m a little dubious as to how factual. There’s actually some info on the net about it.
