The Burnin' Barrels is a high school trap shooting team from a small school near my camp in north central PA. They practice at local gun club I am a member of. Most of the other schools in the area and statewide have many more young people on their teams to draw the best shooters from. So this is an especially big deal that these kids won the State competition.
Way to go Burnin' Barrels, on to the Nationals!
Oswayo Valley Burnin' Barrels Place First in StateMILLPORT — The Oswayo Valley Burnin’ Barrels placed first in the Scholastic Clay Target Program state competition in early June.
The team shoots out of the Oswayo Valley Rod and Gun club in Millport and consists of five students from the Oswayo Valley School District: Mark Olmstead Jr., Zain Harvey, Honor Gross, Alton Skiver and Owen Sturdevant.
The Burnin’ Barrels competed against other teams throughout the state in Elysburg and become the Pennsylvania SCTP Open Division State Champions in singles during the June 8 competition.
Each student shoots 100 clay targets. The five shooters’s scores are combined and the team with the highest count out of 500 is the winner. The Burnin’ Barrels shot 464 out of 500; the second place team shot 448 out of 500.
The team will shoot at the national competition in Marengo, OH on July 18. There, Oswayo Valley will shoot against teams from all over the country.
“These students put a lot of time and energy into doing this,” Mark Olmstead, Sr., head coach, said. “It is quite a commitment for them and their families with all of the practices and traveling all over to shoots leading up to these events.”
The coaches and team thanks everyone who has supported them on this journey.
